Oil leak help

My 3.0 has a pretty good oil leak, drips on the ground puddle the size of an apple after sitting. I removed the plastic pan under the front and the leak is before the stiffening pan under the oil ban but not seemingly coming from anything in the engine front. Drip is on the Drivers side. Hmm.
Suspect oil filter housing gasket but not seeing anything fresh on or near the alternator. Also suspect the oil pan gasket sure hope not.

Had this thing apart when I did the head gasket, all new hoses, oil lines and separator.

Any suggested “look ats” appreciated.

Oil pan is common on our cars, my 3.0 is leaking from there now too lol!

I was also going to suggest a look at the valve cover gasket as this is another common leaker but I assume it was replaced as you said you did the head gasket.

My bet is OFHG. Bavauto used to offer an upgraded viton? rubber gasket. Now that they're out of biz, I don't know if someone else picked up that item?

AM.

Big leaks (like you have) are usually from the ofhg since oil is in there under pressure, and there's also an anti-drainback valve to hold the oil up there versus draining to the pan. BUT, you probably also have an oil pan gasket leak, too, as 3 out of the last 4 m54's I've owned had oil pan leaks. The oil pan leaks are usually a minor nuisance, though, and a lot of work to correct.

My vote is oil filter housing gasket. Did you already replace the OFHG when you did the head gasket?

No, I didn’t. Got lazy and decided I’d do it later if I had too......

Got it apart, oddly the oil filter housing gasket came out in two layers. Odd. Like somebody pressed a second gasket on top of the other. Odd.

Putting back tomorrow.

For OFH Gasket, use either Dealer (which should last 100K) or Viton.

Any other brand is a guess.

Then clean the bottom and monitor for leak.

I posted info on where oil leak can come from in the thread below.
I did the test on my 2004 E83 X3...
