Exclamation Sport/Steptronic problem

Today on my drive to work I encountered an issue that I have never had before. The gearshift wouldn't kick over into sport or steptronic shifting. If I could get it over it would automatically snap back over into it's original position. I took the knob and gate off when I arrived at work, tried putting it into gear then into sport. It looks like some of the components towards the back of the shifter gate mechanism aren't lining up, but I am unsure of how I would be able to fix this. Any help would be great.
