If you are referring to what is known as the the 2-1 slam (feels like you've been rear-ended!) then you have what is a common issue with the ZF transmission in these cars.

If you see the revs dip and don't feel a slam then perhaps it's something else...

The slam is caused by a number of factors - most likely failing mechatronic solenoids and/or mechatronic seals in the transmission in cars as old as ours.

The fixes vary - some folk try fluid changes but this can make things worse. A full mechatronic rebuild will often sort it (along with fresh fluid and new mechatronic seal).

I have minimized my symptoms by modifying my driving so that I don't let the transmission do it. I also changed the transfer case fluid and reset the transfer case oil wear adaptations (as per the manual) and was perplexed to discover that this maint. procedure reduced the transmission 2-1 slam enormously!! I occasionly get a tiny nudge but the slams are pretty much gone.

Interesting point there, thanks. Didn't realize transfer case oil change would have such a dramatic improvement. Not that I have any problems, but it's been several years since I last changed the oil. Probably should do it soon just to keep the X happy.

Yeah, dunno - I have no theory as to why - I'm just please with the result. It wasn't intended but VERY welcome!

No coding as such but you would want to clear the EGS adaptations etc.

If your current gearbox is OK bar the small issue, then why don't you resolve that - it will be cheaper and then you have a known-good gearbox. Getting another used gearbox is a BIG unknown, unless it has already been fully rebuilt. You could easily end up with two faulty gearboxes instead of one good one.

There's a forum member here that is in this exact boat - he now has three faulty gearboxes....

One of the best transmission specialists I have ever seen on here is RRPhil and is located on your side of the pond in Blackburn, UK. I know that's where my gearbox would go if I lived over there.

No re-code. The EGS isn't touched for this work - it's what would need coding (if any was required).

You would need to reset the EGS adaptations though - you'll need a proper scanner or BMW tools for this.
