Has anyone programmed an ABS module using Foxwell NT520?

Hey guys,

Had the 3 lights on ABS, DSC, etc. Wanted traction control before winter hits. I replaced all wheel speed sensors, no change. Still getting codes for both front wheels, one wheel is implausible signal, other no signal.

So about 3 weeks ago I yanked the ABS module and found a local place called BBA Remanufacturing, and I dropped it off. Price was $175 and turn around time was supposed to be 2 to 4 days.

Ended up taking a week and half until it was "done". Picked it up, installed it, cleared codes, drove it, etc - no change, same codes, lights still on. So I yanked it again, dropped it off so they can recheck it. Been another week and a half, and they just told me it hasn't been looked at yet.. supposedly today or tomorrow. I have already spoken to a manager, and it didn't seem to help.

At this point I asked for a refund and they said before they can give me a refund (which they say takes 6 to 8 weeks to issue) a technician has to determine it can't be fixed.

I have a Foxwell NT520 bi-directional scanner. Has anyone used it to program a used module to their E53? I can get a module relatively cheap. I don't want to bring it to the dealer to have it programmed after reading the outrageous amounts they have charged other members here.

At this point, snow will be here soon, and car been down 3 weeks. If anyone has any input or suggestions please let me know.

Thanks,

Erick

I am in the Boston area and have a laptop loaded with NCS, INPA, PA SOFT, etc.

I haven’t tried coding a used ABS module to a car, but I believe I understand the steps in NCS. I have done plenty of other coding in NCS including an E39 manual swap.

If you would like to meet to give it a try, send me a PM

Had the trifecta lights on an E39. I sourced a replacement for $110 after BBA said it couldn't be fixed and offered a rebuilt module for I think $450. Received a refund from BBA. Purchased the repair on eBay so maybe they were more responsive.
I Installed the sourced replacement and the lights have not returned. Got a steering sensor error though which was cleared by a friendly mechanic with an Autel scanner. Simply had to reset the sensor by turning the steering wheel lock to lock a couple of times. Same vintage BMW so maybe its the same for an E53. The BMW part number for the Bosch module I replaced is 0 265 950 002. If you need the name of the dismantler I purchased from let me know.

EDIT: Checking RealOEM does not show the same part numbers for an E39 and E53. Maybe I was lucky with my used module. If it were me I would give a dismantler a try for a working replacement.

Alright, thanks Brad for your input.

Yesterday I picked up the module for the 2nd time from BBA, they said they had found a wire which was causing a short. When I dropped it off to be repaired, I assumed they would test the entire module and repair what's necessary but that does not seem to be the case.

Anyway, installed the module, cleared codes, drove, etc. Same codes are on - front wheels, one has no signal, other implausible. Hooked up my scanner while driving and the rear wheels read intermittently. Reading comes and goes, the front wheels just stay at 0mph all the time.

Not sure what to try next, might swap a wheel speed sensor from front to back and see what that can tell me. In order to get a refund from BBA I would have to remove it for the 3rd time and bring it up there again. The only way they will give me a refund is once a tech says it cannot be repaired. Seems crazy they have to look at it 3 different times to either fix it, or determine it can't be fixed...

Will call some dismantlers tomorrow and try to get a price for a used module.

Hey guys,

Been a while and wanted to update. So after BBA's epic fail trying to repair the module - brought it back there twice both times they told me they found things wrong but didn't fix my issue mentioned above.

So a friend of mine here Mike sent me an ABS module from an e53 he parted out, which I was very thankful for. So I installed it, and then drove up to him to code it. For the first time ever the speedometer and cruise control were not working after swapping in the new module, figured would come back after coding, not the case.

Anyway he hooked up his software, coded it, everything looked good. But all the lights are still on and we didn't get ANY readings from wheel speed sensors while driving around. I have a very hard time believing all 4 speed sensors are bad... Doesn't make sense at all. In addition to no speedo or cruise control after new module the amber colored "brake" light had changed from amber to red since new module.

I'm hoping someone here actually understands these modules and can help me out and figure out what's wrong before snow hits.

Will send pics of codes right after I installed the module, then after we hooked up laptop etc

Thanks guys any input appreciated.

Were the modules the same part number?

Hi All - Appreciate any help here. I helped Boston01 yesterday by coding the new (used/unknown) module using NCS Expert. I also tried to reset steering angle by turning wheel lock to lock. As noted, the coding of the used module seemed to take and the three lights changed from red to yellow. However, none of the 4 wheel sensors reported using INPA while driving. It wasn't perfectly clear, but it seemed OP was getting some wheel speed sensor data prior to swapping ABS/DSC Modules.

On RealOEM it looks like a lot of the later ABS/DSC modules are backward compatible. IS THIS NOT THE CASE?

The relevant part #'s
Bosch 0265950004 - Current part (not sure it's orig) '01 X5 4.4
equates to BMW# 34516754407

Bosch 0265950067 - replacement from an '03 3.0 X5 - coded yesterday
equates to BMW# ???? (Can't find it)

when I look at Ebay listings for the replacement Bosch # (ending 067) it says '02 -'05
X5..So maybe the replacement unit is not compatible with an 01 X5? Any thoughts?

EDIT: I may have answered my own question. Looking up on RealOEM the ABS/DSC module for an '03 E53 3.0, I get BMW Part # 34522285131, which DOES NOT appear to be compatible with pre-'02 X5's, which is consistent with Ebay. Can anyone confirm ?

Also, if you try and buy a new unit from ECS, they sell one part # for production up to 9/01, a different one for 9/01 - 10/03, and so on.

OP likely needs an earlier ABS/DSC module.

Can't confirm if any are back or forward compatible though I would look for and get something like this.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/BMW-OEM-ABS...5.c10#viTabs_0

IMHO the exact part number has the best chance of solving the issue.
