I personally just run without one. Both my E53's have dead electric fans. Runs fine with no temperature issues. Both of them have the temp gauges coded to read as real gauges and not idiot lights.
The 2005 even has the android radio showing actual temp digitally and both run very cold. A/C works great without it too.

If your time is cheap, buy the cheap one and plan on doing it over again sometime soon, if you are having someone else replace the fan, buy a brand new fan. The cost to replace a broken used fan is the same later on.
