Secondary air pump suddenly noisy... No codes.

So out of the blue my secondary air pump has gotten LOUD. Not throwing any codes, shutting off normally after about 30 seconds, etc... Not planning on changing unless it stops working, as they appear to be pretty expensive. Does the noise mean it's on its way out?

Yes sir. If it sounds like a jet engine, it is on its way out. Common failure, happened to mine.

In my case it lasted 12-15 months before the bearing wore down enough to slow the speed enough to throw a code.

I got a hand me down SAP out of a 7-series and resigned the mount to fit so that greatly increased the parts base from a junk yard point of view, probably any 5 or 7 series from about 1998 to 2008 will fit if you try hard enough.

The x series have the filter out on a extended hose vs built into the cap, I think that is just to make the x series able to deal with more dust.

I already had the hand me down when wife's X5 started the jet take off process but I knew if it even fit it would take work to figure out how.

Coincidentally the actual "too low of flow" SAP errors showed up just a day or two before Lumba2 (wife's x) went in for surgery (right rear bearing) so I did both jobs the same time.

You will eventually get errors that trip SES but It could be more than a year.

I would plan to get a used one in the next month or three and be ready to swap when you get the errors.

I heard there was a knock off on Amazon for a decent price like $130 and since it has absolutely no bearing on the engine performance or longevity I would have no problem using chineseium part in this case.

Here is an Amazon search with the part num for my '05 3.0i.... Looks like there are many inexpensive versions to choose from... Guess when the time comes I might consider rolling the dice on one of these.

I remember reading a post by someone who was able to disassemble the unit and lube up all bearings etc. It must be still out there somewhere on the board.

The problem is the small bearing dries out.

I wrote a detailed DIY in the Volvo forum.

Here is the Volvo DIY.
The most difficult part is how to get the impeller off:

PS: Best is to get a new Air Pump, around ? $200 or so at FCPEuro, LT warranty.

Curious... Does the SAP actually contribute to how the X runs, or does it just help with emissions immediately after startup of a cold engine?

Runs for about 90 seconds when the engine is fully cold. Its purpose is to heat the catalytic converters for quicker emission compliance in cold starts in the morning and has no effect in the engine performance unless it is leaking air.

Pretty much, but from my estimation the one that actually makes any sense. Especially for cars driven short distances, the majority of the pollution comes in just the first couple minutes of a cold start (because the cats aren't doing anything).
