The SAP on my Gen-1 Tundra developed jet-engine aspirations at 150k or thereabout. That one lives under the intake manifold, not sure about the design logic..... Looks like a Friday afternoon solution :-). Cost me $140 for the pump and another $80 or so for the manifold seals IIRC.

It did take me a couple of hours to get the valves off the back end of the block to remove the broken impeller pieces lodged there.

People on the TS board reported dealers asking up to 3500 for a replacement job....completely unjustified.
The one in the X5 4.4i lives under the air filter housing and is easy to get to. It is one of few parts that did not have to move out for the engine job I am completing.

Good news is newer Volvo, such as 2004+ models, and later BMW (? 2007+) did away with this pump.

They use VVT technology to modulate the timing to reduce emission on cold start.

PS: The purpose of the Pump is not to heat the cat, rather it injects extra air into the exhaust (the mixture during cold start is rick in gas: air ratio to allow easier start). So when extra air is injected into the exhaust, the amount of pollutants are reduced.

Pollutants are uncombusted hydrocarbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO), oxides of nitrogen (NOx), and particulate matter (PM).

Interesting. My 1998 M3 threw a SAP code in March 2016, then cleared and nothing since. Yesterday (Nov 12, 2019), it threw the code again. Both times, no noise coming from the SAP, and it just passed SMOG check last month -- so wondering if I should bother doing anything?

Hoping 2005 X5 stays quiet, too!

Secondary air pump suddenly noisy... No codes.

What's the sap error? My scan tool will engage sap to confirm it powers up. But air leaks or problem with valve will cause errors.

Were it me and it comes back less than monthly I would just reset it.

Fault Codes:
F5 Secondary air system flow too low, Cyl 1-3 and
F6 Secondary air system flow too low, Cyl 4-6

...and when I said "no noise coming from SAP"...I meant no squealing or other weird noise upon cold startup.

What Scotty no noise at all? If it's not spinning you'll get those codes.

Always good to replace the valve on the exhaust manifold with the pump. They can stick and cause a new pump to go bad prematurely.

The sap made noise when I bough the 2005 and it lasted for about 2 years after that and quit about 4 months ago.

The lack of noise and a secondary maf sensor error was the sign of its final demise.

No code for the sap itself just the secondary maf sensor error. I was thinking the secondary maf was actually bad till I put the error code together with the lack of noise from the pump
