Why you shouldn't buy aftermarket parts.

Here's a video for all you ZF owners as to why you shouldn't buy aftermarket filter for your trans. A lot of the noobie think that they can save a few bucks by buying a cheaper aftermarket part. Besides trans filter MAF should be Siemens or OE part, stay away from the cheap ass eBay, Amazon parts.

Any filter, whether for oil, fuel, transmission...anything regarding fluid or air must always be OE or an OE equal. This is not the place to save money!

The trouble is... it's difficult to know which aftermarket parts are okay and which aren't. I used a Meistersatz aftermarket transmission filter on my E53 and it has worked perfectly. I buy cheap window regulators, as I find there is little/no difference in life compared to the OE units (my experience from my e46). But in general, you're right.... when in doubt, use OE or OEM parts.

AM.

Like X5M-ISH said. filters, fluid, or mechanical engine or transmission parts use OEM or OE.

- Just to clarify ebay and amazon.
These 2 vendors are simply third-party entity.
On their websites, you will dinf: cheap-ass stuff, and new genuine BMW or ZF stuff.

So don't look at vendors, but look at the brand-name of the item(s) on sales.

- Best is to shop rmeuropean, Pelican, FCPEuro etc.
Basically vendors that specialize in BMW stuff.

Another item I found out the hard way never to buy after-market - the PDC sensors. Never ever again. It's like the after-market ones have an expiry date of 2-3 months after install.

I would have preferred if the video gave at least some explanation or theory about what is different for the genuine vs. aftermarket part. For as much talking and explaining that he did ...

In this case, he seems knowledgeable, and seems correct. But if they are different there has to be a reason other than the Made in Germany stamp that makes them function differently.

I guess the pan has a crap filter that restricts flow causing pump to starve.

It always makes me wonder why some cheapo no-name things even get made. Tooling alone for the part must cost a ton, then you have to flood the market and hope people will by the crap parts. Not the way to build a customer base, but it seems to be the way for so many these days. Fleece and run.

I would suspect it is the tolerances and the material used for the filter that is the problem compare with OE manufacturer products.

I agree it is best practice to use OE or OEM parts and fluids for things like transmissions, diffs, transfer cases and engine components. However, there is a big difference in buying aftermarket parts from Ebay to purchasing aftermarket parts from vendors such as ECS Tuning or Turner Motorsports (there are several others and not everyone agrees which vendors are good parts sources). In many cases quality vendors will offer parts that are superior or improve performance over OE or OEM parts.

My experience is, if a part is cheaper than OE or OEM offerings, I expect it has been redesigned to reduce tooling cost, +/- tolerances are not as close, lower cost inferior materials have been used or quality control is not as stringent. I think if one doesn't know why the part is cheaper, to make an informed purchase decision, don't buy it.
