Newbie X Owner with Trifecta and More

Hi everyone, I have been a long time lurker to this forum with all its amazing content but I recently got a reason to become a member. I saved a beautiful 2005 3.0i from the junk yard. Shes in great shape but owner recently lost her Indy mechanic and wanted to part ways with this car at an unthinkable price.

The 4x4 triangle of despair, brake(red) and abs lights are on.

I was waiting on my scanner to show up so I ordered the Transfer case gear and replaced it. The one in the car had apparently been replaced in 08 and looked ok with a little wear.

I have intermittent codes come up, which sometimes nothing changes(i.e. car doesn’t move, just sat for a day or 2)

The 2 codes that always come on even with the car off(hard faults) SAS and Transfer Case

2 that are fairly common but clear. CAN Comm failure and Instrament Cluster Internal.

2 that came back more than once but clear without issues. TPMS light and Bank 1 Lean(car runs like a top, live data confirms this)

Sunday I drove the car for an errand and TRANS FAILSAFE PROG. flashed, my trip reset itself. I noticed the cruise stopped working, but the car shifted fine. It was clearly using a different TCM program since it was shifting a little harder. Got home and rescanned the car.

I had a code for trans in limp home(makes sense)
And A different code for Comm failure, something about DCS(I regret not taking pictures now lol) plus the 4 from above.

I Cleared and they didn’t return. Until I drove the car.

I scanned it again today and only top 2 were present and the trip meter cleared itself again.

I have tried the relearn proceedure for the SAS multiple times the code still comes back immediately. I can view the SAS data live and it seems to be working fine. Same with all the wheel speed sensors. Not sure if they can fail and still send out good data.

Pulled the ABS module and opened it but didn't see any issues there. Ran it without it plugged in nothing changed. plugged it back in and the only different code I got was something about ABS Solenoid. everything else was the same and drove the same.

While it certainly makes sense that the ABS module can give me all these symptoms, I do not believe in coincidences and want to make sure. A lot of the stuff I've been reading has been about the Bosch 5.7, which this car does not have.

Is there more was to test the ABS module out? I am gearing up to order a new one and program myself, as I am not pleased with my Foxwell 650, I got INSTA software I plan to use once my cable comes in for it.

Sorry for the long post fellas Thanks for the input in advanced.

Very annoying that the foxwell number scheme is useless. The 510/520 is the helpful one.

Lean codes usually are intake and I would look into the disa valve if you have the 3.0 (I can't look at the original post when using tapatalk.

Abs gremlins are horrible. The problem with a car that has had the trifecta for a while, multiple things may have broken in addition to the initial fault condition.

If you can get wheel speeds reliably then the problem is likely the abs module, there's a known design flaw that causes the bond wires to break.

Send in repair is about $200

I had an abs sensor "soft fail" when I left it in while removing a hub for bearing replacement. It worked most of the time but had intermittent issues that would bring up trifecta.

Drive around slowly while trifecta off and pay attention to any clue like hitting a bump.

I had trifecta from a loose wheel sensor. I wrapped some Teflon around it and has been working for about two years since.

Thanks for the reply Andrew, all the faults are on at start-up. I’m going to order a new ABS module and program myself at some point the Foxwell 650 is supposed to be the one of the better ones but I just didn’t like how cheap it was and how poor the interface is. I only need this for the bimmer right now so I got all the insta stuff while I figure out what I want for a all around scan tool.

Back to the car. I forgot to mention I get a cluster internal fault. That’s the only one that really confused me. Really hope it’s not a broken wire. But it’s a 15 year old ABS module so I’ll start there I guess.

I also have a cluster fault but I don't get a key in door open gong so I know what the fault is in my case.

Ironically the 6xx have less control than the 5xx. Very annoying.

I will update as progress is made, I hate finding threads for issues with no resolve. So I took a couple steps back I returned my silly Foxwell Scanner and poored a couple weeks into getting INPA and ISTA to work on my computer. I was fighting communication issues with my laptop and the car which was a mix between settings, cable issues and finally communication issues with certain control units.

FINALLY ISTA is ALIVE! so I have been poking around with that for an hour getting used to how it works and all the tools available. I am so disappointing I did not try this sooner I have never used a diagnostic tool as powerful as ISTA before.

So with a little goofing around I started to suspect the Transfer Case Control Module or VTG. I wasn't even aware there was one in the car. I popped the seat up to find a bunch of dirt and evidence of moisture and sure enough there is corrosion all over the plugs. BINGO!!! I am working on replacing this, I will clean the contacts and see if the symptoms improve but its looking like a lost cause.

Do you have any idea from where water has leaked in there under the rear seat?

Clavurion The Sunroof Drains were completely backup, I have no idea for how long. That would be my guess. There is a water mark on the carpet just below that corner of the seat so I am not sure if this was a lucky water fall or not. This car was in Texas when they were getting a lot of rain fall two years ago.

Update: I got a used VTG Module of eBay with shipping for $24.50 I figured I gamble with this every number matched except build date. New module is 3 months newer supposedly off an X5 and the units serial number. Plugged the module in and scanned the car. All the lights are the same but down to two codes after driving 50 miles and 4 history deletes.

DXC8 Module internal
VTG - Oil Life Low detected.

I heard that you can run a calibration for the oil life. I will do that when I get back home from my work trip - I don’t doubt that the fluid is past its prime but for the sake of trouble shooting id like to bypass this issue.

In other news I totaled my ‘17 Sierra Friday so the X5 is officially the daily driver lol uggghhhhh

You need to check/change the oil. I had very similar codes on client 328xi from the oil leaking out.

Do you have RED brake light vs YELLOW?

The internal error can mean the clutch can't move properly or is worn out.

Were that my car I would get the OEM not BMW liter of fluid from fcpeuro and drain and fill with some prayers. When the clutch wears out the computer also thinks the oil is expired.

Before doing that I would first find where you can activate the TC actuator motor. I think the automatic run of the motor at key off is disabled when TC throwing errors.

Find out if your model uses the plastic actuator gear as that will give you the internal error. You can buy just the gear or even just flip the gear 180° as it only goes back and forth.

Hopefully easier to get at than 328xi that was a bitch
