Yes, my hood latch returns when pulled. Check and lube the junction thingy.

will do fella, crazy thing is it has always been like this...compared it with other halfs e46 and that lever does return to its original position....

Ok update on this , grabbed a can of penetrating fluid poked straw into the areas crudely highlighted in yellow and sprayed, and now the lever once pulled up and then released flicks effortlessly back down, whereas before it would move down a bit slowly but not fully ...and this caused my bonnet to yes open ok but not close without me pushing the lever back down manually
