Heard a whine at the rear, stalled today, fuel pump?

05 X5, 135k miles. Just yesterday while checking the tire pressure with the engine running I heard a whining noise at the rear of the vehicle. Today my wife says it stalled while pulling out onto a road. It then started again and she kept going, driving fine for now. Last I saw it was down around a 1/4 tank.

So fuel pump or transfer pump? Looks like when the transfer pump goes it won't start at all until you add more fuel? So probably fuel pump?

The fuel pump always whines when running just not that obvious once the car starts.

You usually cant start the car once it stalls due to transfer pump failure but adding a couple gallons of gas you will be able to drive maybe 10-15 miles.

Learn how to use hidden menu test 6. It will show the quantity of gas left and right and you can determine what the fault is just from the gas tank levels.

Eg: if the right side drops below 1L of fuel before the left goes to zero the transfer pump oring has failed. (50¢ repair).

My wife asked me to go pick it up. Ran like crap, I put it in neutral at a stop light so I could keep it from stalling.

Here's the fuel tank status with the fuel gauge showing just under a 1/4

Here's the codes

16.6/2.6 is ok reading. If you get a cylinder misfire the computer will shut it off and car will run like crap until you clear the code

You can get random cyl misfire from cam position sensor; was my first repair on my car and almost never will you get an error directly related to cps.

I would make sure you are getting full pressure for fuel at the rail.

The primary example of CPS failure is this;

Drive from 0 to 5-7 mph then coast. Car stalls. Will re start usually not a problem. May not do that again for a month.

Happened to me when I would meander through a parking lot and when I let off throttle tuning into a spot the car would shut itself off.

The other time it happened was pulling forward at a traffic light in the left trim lane and coasting to a stop waiting for traffic.

If those examples feel familiar get an own or oe CPS for the intake side it's almost certainly the problem.

The car has no problem getting fuel out of the tank when down to 0.0L on the right side (because there is about 3.6L more past zero) Soo unless the electric pump had failed it's not fuel delivery

Wife's exhaust CPS failed recently and to my utter shock it set a code actually related to the actual part!

I cleared the codes, started, still idles rough. CEL came back, checked and it was lean bank 1/2. Cleared again, drove a little, now I'm just getting cylinder 4 misfire.

As mentioned, I would eliminate any possibility it is a fuel pressure issue with a fuel rail pressure test before moving on to other possibilities. Easy to do and if you don't have the tester it is inexpensive or most auto parts stores will do it free of charge.

I didn't see mention of which engine.

M62 has two intake cam sensors M64 has an intake and exhaust. I have the M54 but have worked on the m62tu engine. You will usually get random errors when intake CPS is to fault: cyl4 missfire with fuel cutoff for example.

Wife's X5 was having random misfire that was traced to a bad coil. Swapped cylinder and the missfire followed, swapped two coil packs for hand me down and when a third started acting up I ran some injector cleaner and problem vaporized.

So I would run some injector cleaner, I used Lucas. Then see if it happens again and if it happens when you give a little throttle to move 20' and coast. If it stalls at that point, almost surely CPS

If you keep getting lean codes you want to check for fuel pressure and vacuum leaks. The injectors pulse for set amount of time and use the math based on 50psi. If you have 45 psi you'll be running lean 10%.

If I get an error on one cylinder I will swap the coil with a nearby cylinder and also check the plug and clean it.

If the error follows the coil to the other cylinder, change the coil, if it doesn't than it's likely the injector (or a global problem like low fuel pressure or MAF)

Since you have a lean condition n both banks I would suggest that you look for a vacuum leak. If you have the 6 cylinder engine, check the intake boot rubber elbow connection to the idle air controller (IAC).
