There should be no need to reset anything.

On my 2002 there wasn't and anything e21, e30, and e34 I've had after that only required the radio code. I skipped e36 and jumped to e46, e53 and e90.
It would help to know what kind of car you have.

If you are planning to disconnect battery power for safety reasons due to the 12V on the main cable to the alternator - great idea.

Easy ways to do this depend on what car you have. On my 2001 3.0i, and perhaps on all E53s with air cooled alternators (*), the connection from the battery to the alternator runs through the B+ jump port in the engine bay. Simply disconnecting that 19mm nut will isolate the starter and alternator B+ cables from the battery.

That can / should be easily confirmed with a voltmeter after you disconnect. This way, the rest of the car remains live, while still allowing safe work at the alternator. Also disconnecting there is far simpler than accessing the battery in the trunk.

(*) - not sure on this, but it appears that the E53s with water cooled alternators have a different cable layout, where this is not true, and that engine bay B+ jump port is at the end of the line.

Good call! I can confirm this is the routing on 3.0d too.

When I did my recent upgrade for my wife’s alternator I just disconnected at the battery port under the hood. The wiring diagrams from BMW indicate that it does not come apart they are not correct it does come apart. at least on gas powered 3 L
