I don't understand why you did that.
Most people install the bolt a few turns, give it a few gentle taps and the "sliding nut" will move by 2-3mm, enough for re-installation. No need for any fancy tool to move the "sliding nut"...

Tried that. Didn't work for my Michigan vehicle. The nut was pretty corroded. I buffed it with a wire wheel and will use antiseize when I reinsert it into the housing.

I just replaced my alternator tonight (second time this week; the first one lasted about 20 total minutes of driving).
I did the trick described where I put the bolt in a few turns and hit with a hammer to move the sliding nut exactly 1mm and it made the install the easiest of four times I've done it. I did not need to loosen the nut for removal but it's moronic that the unit's come from part store Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

I just use a c-clamp and a socket to push the sliding nut back enough to fit the alternator back onto the engine. You can also use a bolt, a nut, and a socket if you don't have a c-clamp. Waste of a good tool if you ask me.

If you already put the alternator into position without moving the insert nut, if you have it, a palm nailer works wonders to hit hard with no swing

Actually those very low cost air hammer chisels get modified at my house all the time.
If you have to do any metal forming, you can make custom micro air hammers with whatever shape you need for about $3.00 each
