M62 Turbo project - can it be done?

Hi guys,

Greetings from Europe, Im searching all over the web for any legitimate X5 m62 twinturbo or single turbo projects, but seems that there are close to none. Found one guy in Russia who has done an E53 4cyl turbo swap, but nothing with an m62. After studying the engine in and out M62TU manual I think the main problem may be the vanos and alusil, which may not be ideal for forced induction. But what do you think? Or maybe an easier option of early m60 swap should be considered (every second drift car in Europe is m60 turbo).

Hi Bav,

I hate to be “that guy”... but to your question anything can be done with the budget, knowledge and time

That said, a turbo with the vanos should be no different per say than a supercharger and there were a handful, well... I guess there were maybe 2 or 3 kits made, for the E53 so my gut says if you can manufacture the manifold, blow off piping, intercooler plumbing and all that good stuff and get it snugged under the hood - yep, an M62TU could definitely be turbo charged.

There’s a guy on YouTube who actually installed a turbo charged LS motor, he lost his all wheel drive, but yep, he installed a working, running turbo motor and made solid power!

Would love to see it done if you push forward and if we can help in anyway, just let us know.

Have fun!!

A while ago I searched for this too but did not find much other then E36 Drift cars with M62 turbo kits and forward facing exhaust manifolds on ebay.
I could not find complete build threads for an E53 unfortunately.

The M62TU can handle boost with no engine alterations. The weakest link depending on the amount of boost will likely be the transmission.

The turbo kit that would require the least modifications would be the STS universal rear turbo kit. They also offer a twin turbo kit. It's now sold by Holley. The easiest and least expensive way to go is nitrous. Twin turbos or supercharger for M62TU after all the alterations will be $7-10,000. Could be as high as $12,000. Depending on the nitrous and meth kit the investment will be somewhere around $3-4000. The install is not difficult. Unlike turbos gain is instant. Supercharger will come on sooner but still not close to nitrous.

The potential downsides to you---takes up space in rear compartment, only there when you open and purge the bottle, have to know a place that sells nitrous, ongoing expense of filling bottles and low restriction exhaust to maximize the benefit of the power adder.

I can post pictures of install if you are interested.
Currently I am using a 150 shot of nitrous and meth injection. I didn't change the tune. I am using the Dinan Tune that was installed when I did all the Dinan engine mods and exhaust. I haven't needed to go to larger injectors. The meth takes care of the greatest risk of nitrous which is spark knock. Have not had one problem with nitrous.
