Picked this up last summer ... Issues and progress...
E53 rated for 6000# towing capacity, 500# tongue weight. The gross combined is inline with that number as the x5 e53 will be just under 5000# empty. I have heavy duty tires rated 500# more each than stock and have no concern breaking stock official max load by a few hundred pounds. I was over 10% once which was still something like 600-800# lower than the tire rating. The stock tires are right at the limit of the rated max load and I'm sure a big part of that formula. Typically loaded, my e53 weighs 2400# front axle, 3200# rear axle 5600# total. I think without fuel I weighed in about 4800# once so me, fuel and tools is 800#

The oem hitch is rated at 6000 lbs. but the aftermarket hitches (generally of a similar design) top out at 3500-4000 lbs I believe.

Unless they copy the OEM hitch to secure to the subframe that makes perfect sense.
Of course If the non OEM hitch is class 2, than of course it will be substantially lower capacity.

Leaving the stalk on the auto mode doesn't work - the auto mode is cancelled everytime you turn the igintion off, regardless of stalk position...

That must be a post 2004 deal. 01 has physical lock into auto mode. I leave mine in sensor mode some times for weeks and discover it's on when it rains.
Do you have the momentary switch for turn signal as well?

Momentary switch for turn signal? Yes - half a push on the stalk give one flash. But "comfort signalling" (one push gives three or five flashes)? No... no E53 had that, although you can modify them for it.

Mine also has the comfort blink of 3 from my iBus app. You can choose up to 7 I believe. Another older choice for comfort blink was the ModLight 2 from Bulgaria. Coding this feature in the factory LCM does not exist.

I put LED rear flashers. I get 3 blinks on my 2001 from a momentary tap of the signal. (Because they blink so fast: I don't have the software for coding). I couldn't put them in the front because the car uses dim flow for the parking at night function in the front.
On the back it uses the run lamp not the turn signal . I still have Incan lamps for run/brake in the back (though I rewired them for all four to light for brake).

That's funny about the homeless window washer. I thought you were talking about another car nearby spraying which reminds me of this funny bit: In heavy traffic where people are typically 4x as close as a safe distance of 2 seconds: clean your windows: the oversoray gets the guy behind you. He has to spray, that gets the guy behind him. He has to spray. That gets the guy behind him. Etc etc. I will do it on purpose and repeatedly for tailgaters. Much safer than the asinine process they call a brake check.
