Thinking of selling my Black Saphire 03 4.6is and getting 06 3.0

Strange title, isn't it?

Well, my reasons are mainly the want of Alpine White which 06 that I'm looking at has, getting tired on working on BMW V8 and I've always had more love for inline 6. Yes, it's slightly underpowered but this would be my wife's X5.

Also, question for those who's had both:

Which AWD you liked more? The older mechanical N125 such as in my 4.6is or the newer electronicaly controled ATC500 found in 06 I'm looking at.

TIA.

Can't go wrong with the M54. I am currently at 189,000 miles and headed for 300,000 miles with minimal maintenance.

Slightly underpowered as you point out but unless you are racing the car next to you, a solid decision.

Yes, after working 15 years on many M52 / M5TU / M54 vs M62 / M62TU, the inline 6 is my favorite.
I was also never a fan of air ride. My understanding that air ride was optional on 3.0 and the one I'm looking also doesn't have it.
Another cool thing about 3.0 I'm about to check out (hopefuly this weekend) is the 08/06 production date which puts it one of the last ones built. Real oem shows 09/06 as the last month of production.

After selling the V8 and buying a I6, don't facepalm your head and shout I coulda have a V8.

I used to have 3.0 and moved to 4.6is.
I totally hear you. I6 is much easier to work on and less problematic than v8.
If it was for my wife, even though I love my 4.6is, I would seriously consider moving back to 3.0.

After just finished VC covers on my 4.6is, I've had it with V8. I've had my 540 for 13 years and M5 for 2 years (both sold now) and I simply miss silky smooth torque of I6 and no TC guides crap etc...

Agree. I have just over 250,000 miles on my M54. I'm shooting for 300,000. It uses some oil, but what car with that kind of mileage doesn't. Also, not 100% convinced the oil usage isn't due to the stupid design of the CCV.

Odds are it is the CCV. Sometimes the smartest designs have the stupidest drawbacks, ie. drinking oil with every meal of the day.
