I will just add a little bit more coolant. I did not get the error yesterday at all...

I have a 3.0i, so this may not be relevant to your tank, but before I fixed my slowly leaking heater pipe, I'd wait until the low coolant level warning would come on the dash before adding. Doing that, I found that it would take almost exactly one liter between the low-level warning trigger point and the float indicating full.

Since you were finding that it showed low when the engine was cold, but (as I interpreted your report) following a slight warmup, it would no longer read low (presumably due to coolant thermal expansion), you were probably pretty close to the trigger point.

Now that you've added coolant, of course that is no longer true. But for others, and for the future, ...

Well I checked and the level is still the same with no coolant loss. I added coolant and now I am getting the error on every start up even though it is more full then before. The float stick looks pretty bad. Pics are before adding a little more coolant. Before the next cold start I will gently press the float down and see if it helps as it may be stuck...Name: 20200510_105233.jpg

I believe the bottom of the float has the magnet that trip the sensor. if the top is broken off the float is going to just hold it down because it’s not poking through the hole that guides it. You would need to fish the stick of the float through the guide wow there’s enough coolant to keep it there

It is always at the top when I open the cap. That's why I think it may be a sensor issue...

what is at the top ? it’s only part of the float. I’m kind of curious where the rest of it is

It appears to be the float minus the stick.

Come to find out the washer fluid level sensor is the same as the coolant level sensor which my friend had a spare from an e60 which matched the e53 coolant sensor. Swapped it in and so far so good. No check coolant error yet...
