Thanks OS and all the other who contributed to this thread. Very useful!
My story is my original main key is still working after sixteen and a half years, even though I only usually drive the X5 one or two times a week. The other key died at about year seven or eight. I tried to replace the battery without success. There were several possible reasons: it went through the washing machine, cutting the key open may have damaged a component, the battery I bought may not have worked or I didn't attach it correctly. With the information in this thread, I could have done a better diagnosis. In particular, I could have used the two AA battery trick that OS came up with to make sure the key was still working before ordering the new battery. I have two types of Qi charger: a Tylt stand and a cheapo one built into a pen organizer I got at Sam's. Neither indicates it charges my working key, but OS noted that his son's doesn't either. I read somewhere else on this forum another trick.
For either having a separate key fob to hide on the vehicle OR to put on a Key ring with the dead diamond key fob. I luckily still have 2 working diamond keys but this is what I have hidden on my vehicle just in case I need it. That older style key fob uses a replaceable type 2016 battery and can be programmed to your vehicle the same way your diamond key does. Sent from my Pixel 3 using Tapatalk

I ordered this item for my diamond key that the remote options don't work on:
3 Button EWS Remote Key Control Circuit Board 433MHZ or 315MHZ for BMW Keyless https://www.ebay.com/itm/193908942077 $8.50 delivered. I'll replace the included CR 2032 battery with a name brand one before sealing it. That'll probably make it last longer. Currently, it looks like two of these would be about the same price as a two-pack of replacement diamond keys, which could be scavenged for their circuit boards, but I only need one. My eBay order arrived of just the circuit board in three days (see post #25). I used the instructions here to program the new remote:
https://www.xoutpost.com/articles/x5...ob-bmw-x5.html Oddly, when programming the new remote, in step 5, the doors locked on the second press of the lock button (while its unlock button was held down). Is that normal? It seems to be working now and the seat changes position depending on which I key use. However, I misunderstood something fundamental. With the new circuit board in the old, non-working battery diamond key, the remote buttons work, but the engine will not start. If I put the old circuit board back, it does start the engine. I did some searching and figured out what I hadn't taken into account. This thread was helpful: https://www.bimmerfest.com/threads/i...ve-coil.518505 So I guess I'm going to have to get another diamond fob. The good thing is that I have a second working remote now which was my main motivation for this project. The other original diamond key's factory battery is still working after 17.5 years. Pretty amazing! Last edited by haigha; 05-03-2021 at 07:41 PM. Reason: Figured out the problem. |

Many eBay boards have only the RF transmitter for lockining/alarm.

It's pretty clear that the eBay sellers have not looked at it - they state (at least on the one you have purchased) the there are three "EWS" buttons.
EWS has no buttons.

Does anyone know if the transponder chip is also where the VIN is stored?
