I pulled the tensioners out. Interestingly, they are different. One has a spring and the other one does not seem to have one. Regarding the swap of the shoe, I like the way you are thinking. I pulled the plastic part out of the new one and it may be possible to move it around and clip it in although it may be difficult to make such a move. And if it does not go in, I'd have to do A LOT more work to get the lower cover out of course, which is scary.. Cheers, Ozzie

There is something funny going on with your cam tensioners. I'm almost certain that mine are the same, only one bank is mounted upside down from the other bank. They should both be spring loaded and new ones come with a little U-shaped clips to hold the spring compressed until you have the cam timing gears and chain place. *Maybe* the springs isn't necessary once oil pressure has built up but I find it strange that you didn't have a spring in one of the tensioners.

Quick update : I am in the process of trying to replace the plastic 'shoe' piece of the V shaped chain guide as Andrew suggested. Interestingly the old one was not very brittle but eventually broke into pieces when I was trying to take it out. I attempted to move the new one in but it seems to get stuck somewhere. I will try again tomorrow from the left side this time attaching a little wire to push and from one side and pull from the other. I will also use my cheap boroscope to see what is going on. If it does not work, there is a lot more disassembly waiting for me, I guess.. Cheers, Ozzie

Try from the sump. Also you can make more room by dropping the chain down around the drive socket. Not sure you can remove with the lower cover on. Be careful around the oil separator it is super brittle.

Access from the oil pan? Chain is as low as it can get and still leaving me not much room. Not sure what you mean by oil separator. M62 oil separator is behind intake not inside like N62.. Cheers, Ozzie

This seems like you need to take the crank bolt out and remove the front covers. This is the standard way to do this. Gaskets aren't that expensive.

I was actually able to slide the new V shaped chain guide in properly so no need to take the covers off. My first attempt from right to left was unsuccessful because one or two of the little clamping teeth got stuck on chain so I tried from left to right. There is actually more space there to move so it was easier but I also attached a little wire to the end of the guide which I routed from the other side to pull the guide from right as I push from the left. One more thing I did was to wrap some tape over those little teeth so they would not be stuck in the process again. I checked multiple times if it went in properly and it looks like it is in with the clamps clicked in from all sides.. I did some quick lifter rebuild over the weekend on bank 2 since there was some ticking there. I am also replacing the vanos seals (waiting for them to arrive). Btw, what are the torque numbers of those 10 camshaft cap nuts? I think I need to put new ones in since a couple of them do not torque passing 20nm (Is the value supposed to be 30nm?) Cheers, Ozzie
