Crank but no start

While troubleshooting my AC issue (thank you all for help, I am ordering a new aux fan) my car refused to start. It is cranking just fine but will not start. The foxwell has no pertinent codes (just the aux fan code in the DME and nothing else other than some light codes).

Symptoms: car worked last night. Today I fired up the foxwell again and scanned codes and disconnected the aux fan cable trying to check for voltage. I tried resetting the oil change indicator but it wouldn't let me. I looked at the EWS in the "service" page, as well as a few other menus, but didn't do anything with it. Then I tried starting it and it won't start. It turns over very strongly and continuously and doesn't throw any codes other than the aux fan.

From searching, I think I've determined that if the immobilizer had tripped or faulted, that it wouldn't turn over -- it would disable the starter. Is that a good assumption>

Any help would be appreciated. I am trying to find a manual or guide on how the BMW EWS IV works, but can only find up to EWS III.

Your vehicle has EWS 3.3. The current new EWS module BMW offers is EWS 4.3, which is downwards compatible.

If the vehicle is cranking EWS has recognised the key. If the sync between EWS and DME is lost it won't allow fuel injection. So check with your diagnostics if it has a feature to re-sync EWS-DME. There should be a code on DME for EWS manipulation but for some reason it doesn't always show up.

Thanks for the reply.

There seems to be several ways to access the DME-EWS adjustment, and only some of them work. When I go into Service -> Drive -> Electronic Car Immobilization System, I get the following options:

1. Starting value programming, only for new DME
2. Starting value adjustment (reset)
3. Logged fault codes related to EWS
4. Function check/problems
5. terminated

When I do 4., it asks me to try to start the engine, and what happens, and then it says "System not OK. First read fault memory for EWS. Continue with 3 in Selection"

I go to 3 and get no faults.

When I try option 2, it just says "No communication. Check if the scan tool is connected, check ignition, check battery"

When I go to "maintenance" and read codes directly from the EWS, it says "System pass. No faults found." I can even get live data out of it, so I know it's talking to the EWS.

I'm not sure what to think -- is it perhaps that my Foxwell doesn't have the ability to get the EWS and the DME to make up?

Edit: by the way, I REALLY appreciate the help!

I had the same symptoms on wife's car after sitting 8 weeks waiting for me to put in a new fuel pump

after putting in the new pump crank all day no sign of life.

After 7 cranks of 6-9 seconds, triple the norm not one sign of fuel plus spark.

Thinking maybe ews I went into the service main menu on the foxwell and found the ews key sync section

I ran the key sync function it asked "did the car start" i answered no. Then I did it agajn and again I answered no.

I then tried a very long crank like 12 seconds and I got a couple of cylinders to chuchuchug. I set down the foxwell and then just returned to the 6-9 second cranks and got some cylinders to fire. More each time and on the 10th or 12th crank it started.

In my case I am not sure it wasn't just a coincidence since it still took a hell of a lot of cranking before it started (but I need a new fuel pressure regulator).

Try to use the key sync function I have seen people post that had happened to them that's what made me think of trying it.

"2. Starting value adjustment (reset)" is the EWS-DME sync (resets the rolling code on both modules to start with the first one on the list). I don't know why this diagnostics doesn't allow you to do it even if you can still communicate with both modules.

I tried accessing the DME/EWS synchronization every which way I could again -- it is accessible from several different places. No luck

The only thing I can think of is that the battery isn't charged enough, since I have read that that can affect the synchronization. My battery voltage was at about 12.2 volts when I tried this. I will leave it on the trickle charger for a few more hours and see if it works later tonight. Otherwise, I'm either going to have to buy another tool, or call a mechanic who has the proper tool.

acting like a looae wire or bad comnection.

Run the auto scan function it runs through all the modules we can see if there is a systemic fault like a shorted can buss

Like Upallnight says, check the basics. Have a look at a wiring diagram. I'm pretty sure the big wire to the electric fan should be live all the time so maybe you blew a fuse when you where doing your fan or A/C testing that also supplies power to something that the car needs to start, like maybe injectors.

I pulled a plug and there's no fuel. I can't really check for spark though, I don't have someone to crank the car while I hold the plug.

I ran codes again and this time the DME gave me error D1: Anti-tampering protection EWS. I cleared this code and tried again with no luck, though. I tried to resynchronize again this morning, but the Foxwell gives me the same error, says that it can't communicate to the EWS. But I can still read codes (none) and live data off the EWS, which works exactly correct. It tells me in real time what the key, starter, clutch pedal, etc are doing.

I have the battery fully charged this morning so I don't think that it's a battery problem keeping the EWS from resynchronizing. I'll try a few more things but I think I either need to get a tool that can synchronize the two (INPA? NCS?) or call a mechanic. Maybe I can find an indy who can bring a tool out so I don't have to tow it.
