There is a seal at the end of the pedestal. Most likely that is what is leaking. A leaking valve cover will cause oil to run onto the exhaust and will either smoke or you'll get a hot oil smell when it does. Most likely is the gear oil from the front diff. Easiest way to tell is to smell it. 90w smells like 90w, not motor oil. If you're convinced it's not that I'd suggest putting UV dye in the motor oil then checking it with a black light. If it is motor oil it will glow and you'll have your confirmation. My money is on a worn seal. Mine started leaking after a recent axle change, so it is on my to do list.
