I'm struggling to find information on where the FPR is located on these cars. Some resources suggest it's built into the filter, and others show it requires removal of the fuel rail to access and resembles a GM/Ford style thermostat in shape. Kinda.

Where is it?? lol.

I'm quite excited at the prospect of finally fixing this issue. I suspect it's also the reason for the random stalling the car used to have (not so much lately) that occured when driving very slowly (like gas station speed) after driving for hours on a highway. And apparently it can also be responsible for the occasional smell of gas.
FPR is located with the fuel filter. The fuel filter is located behind some plastic covering near the back of the car. Plenty of youtube vides on replacing the fuel filter.

Ok yep I've seen the instructions on fuel filter replacement. Seems straight forward.

Whenever I search for Fuel Pressure Regulator, it comes up with this (attached) product. That's why I'm confused about whether or not I need a separate regulator or just a new filter?

Buy a new filter with a new regulator and be done with it. Why do people want to save pennies and waste time doing the job over and over?

As for your hard start after its been sitting for a long time, I would connect a fuel pressure gauge to the fuel rail and see how long it take for the fuel pressure to leak down. Could be you have some leaky injectors and the gas is leaking into the cylinders and basically flooding the engine. You can also have someone observe the exhaust or start the car while you observe the exhaust and see if you have a lot of black smoke at the startup. Black smoke at the startup will indiate a flooded cylinder(s).

Ah so that part in the pic is actually part of the filter then?

Smoke observed is a little bit of white smoke, and a little bit of blue smoke. I've seen black smoke but isn't the predominantly noticable smoke.

Fuel pressure test happening this evening.

FPR is a separate part attached to and sold with the filter.

It is possible to buy just the FPR, but I've not seen the filter solo.

Here's the filter/FPR that's in my cart at fcpeuro.

Aha, I gotcha. That's where I was confused. I saw a video online that showed a regulator mounted on a fuel rail that required the injectors to be pulled up and everything. Was dreading having to deal with that lol.

I'll check fuel pressure this evening and get a pump and filter ordered if the pressure isn't holding up.

Thanks!

Maybe for diesel. Gas models the FPR just attached to the filter.

Careful which hoses went where when changing. I've seen more than a couple cases where crossed over hoses caused additional grief.

I finally got a fuel pressure test gauge that works!

Upon starting it gets 49psi

With a little rev up in Park it jitters between 47-49 and stabilizes at 49.

When turning off the ignition it drops to 45 then slowly down to 43 within a few seconds.

Then I left the gauge connected for 3 hours and came back to it reading 25.

How does this compare to what it's supposed to do? Seems like the pump is working ok but the check valve might be bad, ish? Or leaky injectors? Both?

I have a new pump and filter arriving Thursday either way.

The numbers you described are very similar to my wife's car that is also hard starting . I already replaced the pump and FPR I ordered today
