Have you ever filled up/had cap off while running? Did you get any errors at that time or did it start after that by chance?

No never tried starting it with the cap off or filled up with it running...

The gas cap and purge valve were aftermarket. Cheap URO purge valve and unknown gas cap with a blue oring that said made in austria on that plastic piece that goes into the fill hole but definitely not a BMW cap. The BMW cap seems morenheavy duty with a green oring around it and clicks when tightened where the other one did not...

Most self-serve stations require that the engine is turned off before filling the tank. Even when they had station attendants I remember them telling my dad to shut the engine off before they would fill the tank.

First fill up since the new genuine purge valve from the dealer and the X started up smoothly. I'd say that was the fix and to never use an aftermarket purge valve. I usually preach genuine or OEM parts and being a hyprocrit on this one bit me in the rear...
