And. I sent in my module for my e39, that was my experience. He sure to cover the pump module (the part that remains behind) with aluminum foil to keep any debris out. |

What can I expect if I have to drive it over 200 miles?

You can expect your mileage to be way off as the DME will show fuel consumption and the IKE will report no road speed, thus resulting in 0 mpg. Your odometer will be "off" for that amount of mileage. It's really not THAT big of deal...other than you have no traction control nor ABS nor speedometer...those related things.

Got it. I'll reset both consumption stats on the OBC when I reinstall the unit. Glad to know it doesn't have a "voodoo that you do" Easter egg in the code that just shuts the ECM down after 200 miles. LOL.

My E53 is manual...so when I sent my ABS to get rebuilt I just gauged what current gear I was in and tachometer speed. For an automatic, the shifting could very well be affected as well--but I'm unsure. That's why the AGS has an output speed sensor to determine shifting points based off engine load of the DME and output shaft speed via AGS for the shift-schedule.

As long as my steptronic works...I can easily run it as a manual if my shifting is off. I'm really curious to see if I still get the Trans Failsafe mode with P0720 (output speed sensor) code again after I get the rebuilt ABS unit back. If it doesn't return, that would absolutely prove that the module does indeed interact with the AGS trans box in some way. If it does return then I will swap out the pulse generator in the trans pan.

Do some research on the fault code. I gave you wiring schematics earlier in the post to look at on the transmission.

So, here's the latest. I went ahead and dropped the trans pan and serviced the trans and replaced the output speed sensor. The bad ABS unit is reinstalled as I hadn't mailed it yet. Took it out and at 72mph BAM...TFS again. Headed to my Indy and borrowed a remanufactured ABS unit, coded it, installed it and the trifecta is now gone. Took it out...got it up to over 100 and NO TFS. So, there is some interplay in the software between the ABS and the TCM. I'm guessing they use the CANBUS to communicate in this case. Took the ABS off...put mine back on....hit the road and BAM at 73mph. Reinstalled the good ABS unit again and was able to take it up over 100mph again without issue. Sent my ABS off for a reman and my Indy is letting me borrow this one for the time being.
This would appear to be a situation where a failing ABS unit can cause the TCM to go into TFS and throw a P0720 code when the output speed sensor is actually not at issue.

Hooked my laptop up to the X5 and fired up ISTA. Snapped a pic of the control unit tree which shows how the modules communicate with eachother to hopefully give an understanding that the EGS and the DSC(DXC) work together in some sort of way...
