HELP! ABS module issue and Trans Failsafe
The other day I got the trifecta lights and so I read the codes. Got a right front ABS sensor "open". I grabbed a new sensor and installed it and no go. I have to assume one of the wires must've broken in my ABS unit. I'll send it out to be repaired...BUT...here's the oddness. I get up to just about 70mph and my trans goes into Failsafe and tosses a P0720 (output speed sensor) code. I'm happy to open the pan and change the sensor (pulse generator) but it started when the ABS issue cropped up. Is there some correlation regarding the front sensor or the entire ABS unit that will cause the P0720 code and make my E53 go into limp mode? Any thoughts on further diagnostics? Is it possible to disable the ABS unit in the programming without killing my car? I was thinking about disabling the unit then taking it for a drive to see if it still goes into failsafe. BTW...I can reliably cause it to go into failsafe at about 70MPH....it's not at all random. Thanks, Mike

I have seen a few trans failsafe issues that were ABS module related. I would try the ABS rebuild and see if that resolves the issue. It appears the BBA REMAN rebuild jumped from $95 to $150 but its lifetime warranty...

Thanks. I've already pulled the ABS unit this morning and sent it off for a full rebuild in LA. Module Repair Pro in Van Nuys is another firm that provides a lifetime warranty on their rebuild.
I'm really interested to find out what interplay if any the ABS unit has with the transmission. I can understand if the rear ABS sensor was out as that links up with the speed sensing for the EGR unit (or so I'm told)...but the right front doesn't have an obvious role with the tranny. Hoping someone here has that kind of in depth knowledge. My Indy isn't certain (though he's amazing) and of course the dealer won't confirm or deny it. Have you seen any definitive info on this?

I have programmed a few ABS modules for friends that had the TFS error but did not dive in deep enough to unserstand what causes it or what errors they even had. I did not own an x5 at the time so they kind of researched it on their own and the culprit was the ABS Module. I'd assume maybe being AWD it has its differences than my e38 for speed detection. I actually have a friend now who owns a 4.6iS with the exact same symptoms and errors you have and I recommended he rebuild his ABS module as well but he is yet to do it...

Yep..for the $150 it's a shoe-in for the reman of the ABS unit. Money well spent. I'm now wondering if I can tell the car it doesn't have ABS installed so that I can run up the speed and see what happens. I've never tried that in INPA or NCSExpert and honestly I'm not too keen on doing it without some oversight. I'd hate to brick the car and have to tow it to have the car coded again.

I think with the module unplugged and disconnected you can still drive it up to speed, you just wont have ABS and DSC. It will either go into TFS or it will not.

Did you do any research? There's this great website call newtis.info I'm guessing you have the 4.6is X5. I'm not 100% sure on your configuration--but you might want to use your vin to look up specific wiring diagrams. I would focus on the wiring of your 20 pin connector to the AGS. Focus on the transmission fault code. We would focus on pins 1 and 3 of the 20 pin connector. https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/e...is-sav/YpcI09R

I just realized I made a BIG typo above...I meant the TCU/TCM not EGR...my mind was on two things. I'm trying to see how the transmission control module interfaces and exchanges information with the ABS controller. I understand that I can remove the unit and drive it (as I am at the moment) but I think if there IS a working relationship between the two...that I'm still going to run into a TFS error when I accelerate over 70mph. If I was able to tell the car to "ignore" the abs and then I could see that the only reason the P0720 would come up is due to the partial failure of the transmission output speed sensor aka pulse generator located up in the pan. So...that's the crux of it. Is there a way to safely tell my E53 that it doesn't have ABS so that I can rule it out...or if there is a guru among us that knows how these two systems interact I'd appreciate the info. I don't want to keep slamming my tranny into failsafe as I work this out...God knows these 5HP24 transmissions can be touchy enough on their own.

I would just wait for the rebuilt abs module to come back and test it then.
