CN90’S write up is on point.
Thank you for the information.

Have been using Green Prestone coolant (the concentrated type $12/gallon at Target etc.) + mixed with distilled H2O for 25 yrs in different BMWs.

Zero issues.

You should look at the coolant passage of my cars after 20 years of Green Prestone, it is pristine clear. Just look at the photos in the DIYs I wrote on bimmerfest.

No need to buy BMW coolant.

@lisantica- are there any BMW E46 s or any E39 5 series around your town, this 3.0 is not just specific to our X5 but is same to the 330 and 530 E46 and E39. I would think there is at least another Bimmer fanatic over there??Changing out the most common cooling system parts is not that hard to do and learn,a lot of info on the web too, if you are planning to keep this X5 long term, things DO breakdown ie window regulators ,speed sensors , rear distance sensors , door handle, hoses IACV DISA etc etc, ....
i wish i was closer to you and help you out ...those leak could just be the 2 o rings but getting to it is another story but isnt bad at all with the right tool.

Thank you for your kind words, you are correct according to the BMW dealership finding it states, "found coolant leaking from transmission heat exchanger o-rings".

They also mention swollen hoses and residue under the radiator cap.

They didn't want to just replace the o-rings, wanted a complete overhaul.

After reading many comments on here, I do think that is the way to go since the parts will eventually fail.

I do have the Tuesday appointment where the independent shop can assess the situation and give me some direction on what to do and costs involved.

- At 180K miles, you need a COMPLETE cooling overhaul, hoses included.

- There is a hidden problem: the plastic pipe under the I.M. Replace that too.

If you happen to be near Gardena, CA, you can use that shop I linked to you earlier in this thread.

I would have gone to the shop in Gardena, but since I reached out to my friend I feel that it's only right to go to the shop he recommended since he called the shop for me before giving me their information.

I didn't know that the 3.0i had that plastic pipe under the I.M. I thought that was the bigger engines. I will mention it to the mechanic.

Two pipes actually. Mine were fine up until 186k miles on my 2001. When I did the engine work, I replaced them because they were conveniently accessible. When removed, they are almost guaranteed to crumble away at the point where they go into the cylinder head, so if they get removed they will certainly need to be replaced.

Part numbers for my 2001 3.0i:

11-53-7-502-525 lower heater pipe
11-53-1-435-808 20x3 o-rings (2) for lower heater pipe (these will often come with the pipe, depending on the brand)
11-53-1-705-210 Heater inlet pipe with o-rings

I'd like to pose a question to anyone here, what do you think is a reasonable price to quote for a complete coolant overhaul? The dealer quoted $7,400 for the coolant system.

I'm not looking for a budget price, just a reasonable one with good OEM or near OEM parts.
I feel as though if I have a price in mind when the independent shop gives me their quote I will feel more confident.
