E53 New front axle shaft problem

Hi all,

I bought a set of front axle shafts for my 2000 4.4i.
I fitted them but the outer cv will not fit in the hub. See below pictures. The seller has sold many of these shafts and gets good reviews.

Everywhere I look I see cv shafts with outer measurement of 64.8 while my old shafts are 59mm.

The splines are correct but the hub will not accept a 64.8mm outer cv joint.

I checked real OEM and they say I need 31607503537 and 31607503538 while they have 64.8 outer size...

Can you guys help please?
59mm outer size of my current shaft

64.8mm outer size of the new shaft

The coppergrease mark where the outer cv joint must fit in, which there is no room for.

I would see if you plug in as early a build date as possible in Realoem.com you get a different part number.
On my 2001 with a build date in late 2000 I some times have to specify the build date to get the correct parts.
It may be that there was some sort of changeover date.
Did you enter the last 7 digits in the search on realoem or just the model info?
Supposedly they can reference your vehicle better with the last 7 digits.

Thank you, I used my vin nr on RealOEM and it gave me the same numbers I already had. Tomorrow I will check my hubs and driveshafts to find numbers.

I just discovered E46 3 serie all wheel drive has the driveshaft with 59 or 58.8mm measurement.
OEM nr
31607505199 and 31607505199 but the right hand side shaft is too short.

I might be able to fit just new cv joints to my existing shafts.

Still very strange that the hub is different

I think the very early build cars has smaller (diameter) axles and seemingly, hubs - not sure of the change-over date.

Production date is for my car is 2000-03-02.
When looking online for E53 carrier / hub all I find is the 65mm version. Hopefully I will get some answers tomorrow when I take a closer look at the hub.

I already figured out that E46 XI or XD outer cv joints will fit the E53 shaft but the complete E46 driveshafts are too short for the E53.

Looks like you need the older (smaller) 27mm axles.

Up to 2000.04 the axles were 27mm. From 2000.04 they moved to 29mm axles.

Up to 2000.04 - https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...diagId=31_0763

From 2000.04 - https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...diagId=31_0763

Seems that more than just the axle diameter was changed in 2000.04 - the hub has changed also, despite the part fiche not being very clear on this aspect.

Thank you Wayne, I've found some more threads on this forum and you are right. I have the older type axles.

I will keep the stock shaft and I will change only the outer cv joints as I can't find a complete shaft for sale and in stock.

I want to clarify that all wheel drive 3 series E46, 325xi/330xd/330xi outer CV joints will fit the early E53 front drive shaft.
The early shaft have a 59mm diameter o ring size. E53 from 2000 and after uses a different shaft with a bigger diameter o ring size.

When looking for the outer CV joint you can search for OEM number:
31607505199 / 31607505200

These are for complete shafts for the awd 3 series E46, but might lead you to the part you need. I believe the complete 3 series shaft do not fit the E53 because they are too short, but I can't confirm this.

Might be worth obtaining a set of later production knuckles.

If you have the correct axles, make sure the splines are clean and not mushroomed. Happened to me once. The fix was to file the splines by hand back into proper shape.
