Conventional oil breaks down typically by 2500-3500 miles hence the 3000 miles recommend change interval. Modern synthetic oil really doesn't break down. It needs to be changed because of the soot and other contaminants that collect in the oil. My engine leaks enough currently that I could simply change the filter annually and never drain the oil. Hopimg to resolve that with a pan gasket replacement in the next few weeks.
