Did you ever figure out what the noise from the rear drivers wheel area was? Any signs of rubbing or unusual marks or wear\shinny spots any where? You said brake bleed\rebuild and noise in the rear just before getting the trans issue, I'm wondering if it might be related to the speed sensor or traction control getting an unusual reading from that wheel?
Also, if it were a speed sensor or traction control issue, wouldnt I be getting codes for those from those sensors? I'm getting the EGS Signal line disturbed fault, and the Symptom Gear Check fault.

I took it to a local transmission shop, and they didnt have a solution for me either. Pulled the same codes i did, 49 GEAR MONITORING , 53 GEAR MONITORING GEAR 3.

Quandary:

Will these fault codes become present if the transmission is overheating? My next suspect in the list is the transmission cooler thermostat. I went to start the X5 this morning, and immediately got a check coolant level warning. Shut the car off and lo and behold the tank was completely empty, and there was noticeable dried coolant around the transmission thermostat, but it didnt appear to have been leaking while the car was running. so i topped it off, and drove her to the transmission shop. No issues on the way there, no hard accelerating, a short 3 minute drive is all it is.

They at first could not replicate my issue, no codes were pulled, they said it test drove fine and i'd have to bring it back when i get the trans fail safe. so i took it back and went for a drive for about 10 minutes and the trans fail safe mode kicked it went i punched the gas to hard accelerate from a stop sign, it then just felt like it slipped out of gear and revved all the way up, then i heard what sounded like a belt squeal, and it CLUNKED HARD into gear. The issue doesn't seem to happen unless under hard acceleration. Any further guidance or notable things regarding these codes and my symptoms.

Trans failsafe mode sets you into fourth so what you're saying is just what happens when in that mode.

As far as egs signal line disturbed, at this point I'm leaning towards this code being triggered by another transmission fault code. chrysler's have these codes where the alldata troubleshooting steps tell you take care of the others first and then they all clear out. But then again I can't be sure at this point. There's a big problem of assholes on a few bmw forums (about ten of them from google) with the exact same EGS signal line disturbed, none of them have come back to update their post about what they did to fix it. There's been another case where I talked to a guy here and he replaced about 5 major parts like all modules, cluster, and transmission and then it went away, but in the end he said didn't know what the problem exactly was.

3 times I've had bad wiring to egs. Every time it was water in the connector to the transmission. I think water comes down inside the wiring jacket into the connector since the entire transmission has been bone dry when this has happened

Use gloves the exhaust will be dangerously close. I had to do this last week after driving though very hard rain. The first time it happened after car was sitting a couple months three second time driving through slush and getting sprayed by a passing car.

Same with the water on my 2001 X5. I used the automatic car wash that has the spray from below and it set codes like that. Cleared up in a few hours though.

Never used the wash from below setting again after that
