I do hope the E70 is more comfortable and refined
That's one area the E70 shines. Much more refined cabin as far as noise and materials. I love the E53, but it feels dated when I get into the wife's E70. Even the E61 makes it feel "old."

As for reliability. They've both been comparable as far as costs. Not bad. $500-2000 per year doing your own work. Had to repair some of the emissions stuff on the E70 diesel but it wasn't too bad (NOX sensors and active urea tank). Did the glow plugs and module as well. It has 165000 on it now and throws no check engine lights... Buuuuuuut it does need a trans because the E clutch bearing/bushing went out in the trans. So, there's that. E53's can suffer from this as well so I don't blame the E70 chassis.

I watched your video.
I am at 133K.
Yours has been driven a lot and now > 180K miles.

I have been lucky, compared with yours:

- My alternator still original (you replaced the Bosch alternator twice)
- My Aux Fan still original (you replaced yours with TYC). A trick to extend the life of any Aux fan is avoid stop-and-go traffic bc at faster speed, the Aux fan is off.
- My suspension is still original and doing fine. Not sure if the P.O.'s replaced anything but it looks stock and original. My guess is that the P.O.'s drove conservatively, thus the susp is still OK.
- Brake Metal Lines: replaced only the REAR x2 lines for < $100 bc I did it myself (DIY in this forum). I noticed that you replaced both the REAR and FRONT lines. Every spring (Apr or May) spray the chassis with a garden hose to wash the salt from the winder). Summer heat and salt accelerates corrosion.

Anyway, my experience with BMW or any car is to buy them around 80K, drive to 180K-200K and say good-bye. After 200K, there are simply too many problems...EXPENSIVE problems...

Thanks, yes I agree with you! I think the experience depends on how well the original owner maintained, where you live in the country (weather, rust, driving conditions) and also luck of the draw as some can be borderline lemons...

We live in Fairfield county Connecticut and this commuter sees traffic hell on the Merritt parkway 5 days a week. No way around the congestion here.

I put off looking since we have been all working at home during this pandemic. I thought for sure my wife wouldn't be back at work... but here we are and she is commuting again. The search for an upgrade continues.

Get another E53 with < 80K. They are out there but hard to find now considering that they are at least 15 yrs old.

Not sure I agree with this. Had more than a couple BMW's past 200k. Had one to 400k. My e61 is at 192k and doing great as our daily driver. Buuuuut we had to put $4000 in maintenance/repairs into that the first year we bought it, and $2500 of that was just to get it mobile again after the previous owners neglected it. Truly saved it from the junkyard as the owner had an offer from a yard that I out bid. As I have with a few others.

All that said, it's certainly lowering your risk factor and raising your comfort level to sell them on at 200,000. And I definitely understand the position.

I love me some E53 goodness. I've owned 10+ E53 Stick Shifts both 5 and 6 speed. Currently building a LSX E53 on a 2002 4.6is but bought my wife a 2010 X5 35d in December of 19 and did full deletes and DUDMD Stage 2 tune and it is our most favorite vehicle to haul the kids around. The torque makes it so fun to drive on a daily basis. Can squeeze almost 30mpg on the freeway staying around 68-70mph. It sounds like a Boeing 747 and Diesel near us well under Premium Unleaded. Buy an already deleted E70 x5 35d or buy one and set $3000 aside to do it as soon as you buy it.

Depends on the car and how it was maintained. I have over 255,000 miles on my 3.0 and have not had any major repairs. Parts wear they get replaced by me. That keeps the cost down. Most expensive work I've had to do is a full suspension refresh. Engine still runs fine. Uses some oil, but I don't know too many people running the M54 that don't. I do oil changes every 5000 miles. With proper maintenance the E53 3.0 can go a long ways. There's another person on this forum that has over 350,000 miles on his.
