Radio on but no sound; intermittently
I am guessing the amp is going and am tempted to buy another used one to get me by for now, but I don't know any way to test to make sure this is the problem.

I usually try to avoid throwing parts at a problem until I confirm what is broken, but I didn't want to miss the opportunity to buy a used amp that came off an E53 (so that hopefully I don't have to get any programming done).
I have this one arriving this week. Looks like sort of a PIA to get the old one out. I found a couple videos that seemed to brush right over the part I don't understand about how to get the old one out. Has anyone done this or seen a DIY for it? Obviously, I'll have to remove the plastic piece in front of it, but it looks like the screw heads are coming from the outside. https://www.ebay.com/itm/274482550094

I haven't personally had to replace my amp but it should be straight forward. Just remove the cd changer and the Navigation computer and you should have the room to pull it out. The most you may have to do is pull the brackets for the devices pulled. I cannot see any programming necessary.

I was hoping not to have to remove the components above it, but I guess we will see.
I read that the exact same amp comes in the E46 and some other sedans, but if you use one of those in an E53, then reprogramming is needed due to different speaker configurations - which is why I was glad to get one from an E53. On my way home tonight, after the radio had been silent for 15 minutes or so, I noticed that the head unit was really hot to the touch, and even more when I hit the cassette eject and felt the back side of it. It had been out in the hot sun all day, but this still seemed to be pretty extreme after A/C had been on 20 minutes. Hopefully the new (used) amp fixes it. It came in yesterday and that thing is bigger and heavier than you would think. If any of you guys like to tinker with electronics, you can have the old one for the cost of shipping.

Sounds like the amp is failing. Did you inspect the area for water?
I recall having mine rebuilt and upgraded by someone in England who offers the repair service. |

No water in the area. Hopefully swapping amps fixes it, but I am concerned with how hot the head unit gets. I never paid attention to it before, but I doubt it is normal to be that hot.

I swapped out with the new (used) amp and so far, it works.
If any of you guys like to tinker with electronics and want to dissect the failed amp, I can send it to you for the cost of shipping.

If the fault returns, this issues has been known to be caused by the (unused) phone loom in the center console sorting out and blowing a fuse. This causes the radio to only run for a few minutes at a time...

Please tell me more. I went for a ride, and sure enough, after about 10 minutes, it stopped working again. It is definitely heat related. I have found that on cold mornings, it stays on for my entire 35 minute commute to work, but when it is hot outside, it only lasts 5-10 minutes.

Check fuse #73 in the trunk - it's blown, try replacing it (7.5amp I think). If it blows right away, your phone loom is likely shorted out under the center console. Fuse #73 provides "ignition" power to the radio - with no power via fuse #73 the radio can be turned on but it will auto-switch off after a few minutes, as the radio is set to do if the ignition is not active.
