Replacing lower timing chain tensioner on N62 4.8IS

Hey all! I have some chain noise coming from my 2005 E53 X5 N62 4.8IS. It actually sounds okay from the outside but when I remove the oil filler cap, I definitely hear some light chain slap happening. And a recent oil change showed no signs of plastic bits so hoping it just the tensioner and not the guides.

Anyhow, can anyone point me to the instructions to remove the tensioner? There is nothing on the web for the N62 and only a light mention on this site about having to jack up the engine to remove! Wondering why it is so diffictult to find anything on this engine. Bentley manual has nothing, web was a bust, and even ISTA did not have anything. I guess because it was a super-secret Alina engine at one point? lol.....

Not sure how many differences there are between the 4.4 and the 4.8, but this might give you an idea

Thanks for the reply! That link was instructions for a fan belt tensioner, not a timing chain, unfortunately.

There's something about that tensioner in this TIS doc (attached) for removing and installing N62 engine right cylinder head. There's also a video showing it and, yes, the engine needs to be lifted up as the comments of the video indicate. There won't be sufficient space for it to come off unless the engine is lifted.

I hope these help.

Thanks X5Only! I did come across that video, a lot of "mumbling and fumbling" with not much info to gather from it. And I did see the post you provided but again is very generic. Just mentioned the engine had to be lifted but did not provide other instructions. I am still baffled that this beloved, by many, 4.8IS has such little information on it.

Have you looked at the attached PDF? Sounds like you missed it - it shows the process of tensioner removal and install but does not mention lifting the engine. There're lots of info here on how to lift the N62 engine on an X5 - I've done it before when replacing the engine mounts. Take a look at the tensioner itself and you'll see there's insufficient space for it to come out.

I did see the PDF, thanks. I was confused as it talks about removing the cylinder head which I am hoping I do not have to do. It was helpful to see where the tensioner is located though. I will look around this site on lifting the engine.

Yes, the pdf is for cylinder head removal of which the chain tensioner is also removed and reinstalled as part of that process. Of course, you don't need to remove the cylinder head to remove the tensioner ... you're only interested to remove the tensioner and the info is right there and you just skip all the other unrelated steps!
