I was sure hoping you knew that answer if you already had the vc off.

Every valve set opens every other revolution so if was a common problem on every valve even on one bank you would have a much higher frequency. Half means In or out on one piston were you able to narrow down which piston with stethoscope or phone vibration app?

The usual suspect is the lifter. I’m sure they act quite different dynamically than static and just like when chain tensioner fails, it's possible the insides wear out and it just doesn't stay tight when beat on by the cam lobe. Same as covered above if that one oil port is not supplying proper pressure to that particular lifter

Hey Purplefade,


So you think I should put the cams on and rotate them by hand to see if there is any ticking? I thought about that but I wasn't sure if I would have enough power to rotate them. I guess I could rotate them using an open wrench from their side.


I will try and see what happens. Hopefully it would not cause any damage..

Turn the cam with a 27mm socket at the crank bolt. The only thing I would expect to make a noise is when the cam is allowed to advance over the top of each lobe from the spring tension. I don't think you will be able to reproduce a tap from slow turning but you may discover a short lifter if one is different from the rest. Hard to say without oil pressure

You wouldn't want to turn the cam not in sync with the crank lest you try to overlap piston and valves.

Hey Andrew,


The lifters all came out full of oil and none of them was collapsed but I see your point. They may certainly act differently under heavy pressure from the cam lobes. They may briefly stick and pop and make that noise. To test that I actually tried to apply extra pressure on each to see what happens but did not see a collapse.


I will try what Purplefade recommended to see if I can simulate the problem by rotating the cams by hand.

When you squeezed the lifters did you have a caliper on to measure the lengths? You would not feel the difference that will cause a tick with your fingers. You'd be looking for a couple 1/000 of inch difference.

You are right on that as well. So it would have to have the timing chains back on and correctly timed for that to avoid harming the valves. Thanks for the warning..

I tried to squeeze each and did not feel or see any movement. I thought there would be big movement to make such a loud tick.
I did not measure with a caliper. I guess I can try that as well..

Loud tick in valve train world is 0.004". If you could feel the difference it would sound like marbles were being shot around in the valve train.
