4.6iS new tire options

Just found out my 20" tires are coming apart in the inner sidewall.

Original Toyo STs on there, from 2007. They have a lot of tread left.

So getting tires sooner than I was planning.

Looking at the Conti DWS06, but heard they are not great in the rain with the wider 315/275 tires. Hydroplaning issues.

The Toyo Proxes ST III seem better, but not so great in snow. Odd to not have reasonable all seasons in BC on an AWD SUV.

Looking for something that will wear well, but do all the Sport Activities one would expect from a 4.6.

I get a good discount on Toyos up here, so I may be leaning to them. Then getting an 18" set of snow tires for the few months we have here of freezing temps, with the odd snow.

Has anyone got any thoughts on the ST IIIs with the wider tires? Hydroplaning and cold weather etc? Seems they're not a bad tire, and have better tread design to get water out of the tread.

On another note...when doing an inspection underneath, found that I have an X-pipe...

Also post cat O2 sensor on the drivers side, and a larger box looking device on the passenger side post cat.

Need to do the thrust rod bushings...

Had a look at the TQ converter. Apparently, mine was changed out with a reman unit, or the old one was remanned. Not sure. It was painted blue. Hoping it had the 280mm put back in. Trying to determine what is in there. I suspect if I measure to distance to the TQ Conv end, from the inspection port flange, it would indicate the diameter, vs the 260mm, and I could compare.

Tried uploading photos, prob need more posts.

Thanks again for this great resource of knowledge and community.

Check the rear suspension components and alignment before getting new tires and burning through them...

Roger that.

Though the best indicator of rear suspension and alignment health, would be the tires?

The tread is pretty evenly worn.

I do want to investigate the alignment, but I've heard that traction was lost when reducing camber?

I am on my second set of Continental extreme contact tires. No problem in the rain. The sidewalls are not as stiff of some options so there is a little more tire rollover but not enough to matter. There are lasting somewhat longer than past tires. The greatest feature is that they cost less than anything I have purchased in the past for the 4.6

I’m with bcredliner, I’m on my second set of DWS06 and have never had an issue with hydroplaning . I actually find them to hold the road very well in all weather conditions and I’m a guy who goes through brakes about every 40k miles or so if that tells you anything .

I will jump in on agreement on the Conti DWS06. I find them very affordable for wide 20" tires and I am on my second set as well.

No issues in the rain but they do leave a little to be desired in the snow though. The large size of the 315/275 tires run on top of the snow pack and they tend to dance around a little.

But here in Charlotte, we only get a couple of snow events a year that only last a day or two.

Great info.

We have a 3/4 ton Dodge Cummins to push through snow days if we have to.

But we do have a small mountain pass on the Island Hwy we need to be able to safely deal with 'slush' events that come on.

The DWS06 seem to be mostly marketed as passenger tires?
Yet the X5 crowd seem to be a large market share.

Not every producer makes a 315 either.

Slush is fine, as long as there is asphalt you can contact with. My complaint is when it is 2"-3" of pack on the road and you are running up on top of it. It definitely moves around. Wide tires are a no-no in snow pack conditions, the narrow tires dig right in.

Forgot to mention that the Continental tires are quiet and there have been a reasonable cost option for Corvette owners. They also have a 40,000 mile rating. These characteristics are what got me interested.

What works best is largely associated with where you live, how you drive and what features are important to you. If it snows in Texas I just don't go out. Too many drivers that have never driven on winter roads. If I went back to live in Michigan my choice of winter tires might be different.

I'm an Ohio guy and lord knows we see our (more than usually) fare share of snow, granted I'm only running 265s so I can't speak intelligently on the 315s but my 06's are like Blizzaks in the snow around here - that is, right up until the "S" is worn off and then you definitely notice the change.

I find that point, totally dependent obviously upon how you drive and how many miles a year, to be right around the two year mark for me, usually rock solid for two winters and then begin to fade off after that. I usually put between 6000 and 9000 miles a year on the X so that would be probably about 15000 miles into the tires life I notice that change. Still very driveable for sure but as others have mentioned, you do "drive" the car more once that "S" layer is gone. And I'm sure width does make a difference for sure, think of snow shoes, the wider the footprint the greater the displacement.
