Gearbox oil change on 180k

Morning all my e53 3.0d is on about 180k mark. I have no proof of the gearbox oil and filter being changed so do you think I should change it soon as possible of at that mileage to leave it

I've now got nearly 250,000kms on my '05 3.0d and have only made one slight top-up in the 75,000kms of my ownership. No evidence of a prior service.

I plan on changing the fluid, gasket, filter, bridge, jump and mechatronic seals and probably all the solenoids at some point - until then, I've decided to leave it alone, since it's working mostly)fine.

changing the fluid is never a bad idea especially if you don't know the condition of it.

Cheap and easy maintenance

I would agree, usually a good idea but not always the case, buy a Ford Focus with 150000 miles that has never been changed but working ok - very bad idea to change that.

In my case I bought a 2008 Buick with 120000 miles on it, changed the fluid and it immediately started slipping. Bought another 2011 Buick with 88000 miles on it and did a simple drain and fill and it also started slipping.... so I think that’s really car and case dependent because I ended up putting transmission in both.

That said every BMW that I have owned has responded very well to fluid and filter changes as well as every automatic Mustang I’ve ever owned.
