4.6is heater issue

This morning was the first cold morning in Nevada (18 degrees) and I obviously used the heater. The heater blows warm air at idle or slower speeds but starts to blow cold when on the highway. I understand that when the heater valve goes bad it makes it blow cold at lower speeds so I am not sure where to start.

How is your thermostat? Have you checked your Ktemps on the cluster at operating temp? And what 18 degrees in Nevada?

Get into the hidden menu I think it's test seven that reports ECT. You are describing exactly a stuck open tstat which sadly prob been broken for months giving you terrible mpg. Happened to me due to the non gauge temperature Gizmo on the dash (it's a three position idiot light basically).

The needle points north from approx 65 to 110C. In what alternate universe is that meant to be a needle. If the needle ever moves yours already fucked thanks BMW idiot engineers.

Yea, Reno gets very cold in the winter. I'll open the menu at lunch and see. The thermostat is fairly new but it could be bad.

4.6is heater issue

New doesn't mean fixed but also on the m54, if coolant is low 8oz (240ml), that is enough to kill the heat so that's the first thing to check. I just had to top of wife's yesterday at it was 38f=3.333 c yesterday and no heat.

When low coolant you don't usually get heat at idle either but you might be at just the right level to cause your symptom.

The N/M62 has a different coolant tank but same heat exchanger afaik so very likely low coolant

Ok then you likely aren't getting heat in the heater core.

Do you have scanner that will show heater core temps? Valve status?

With engine warm, check the hoses going in/out of the valves: if you are LHD, it's directly in front of the steering wheel on the firewall inside the engine bay.

At Idle steady State, temp set to say 72F automatic, the valves usually tick on/off about every second. Can be heard in the cabin should be very easy to feel clicking on the valve itself (use gloves in case it's working I'll be hot enough to hurt)

Prob should have led with this, but center dash vent shows three red dots? If blue dots you are pulling in outside air.

yes center vents are on the three red dots. Also, when i took the car out during lunch (33 degrees outside) i noticed on the highway that the heater will cycle between hot and cold air.

Any errors for the heater valves in the IHKA module ?

Run manual vs auto temp. Set temp high like 80 and vent control to dash.

My wife's sampling thermometer inside the dash has flow problems and doesnt know the temp in the cabin. You may have a problem with the sample grill being plugged or the fan that pulls sample air in broken.

The grill is just right of the left seat heat indicator maybe a little higher. I use a gum tooth pick brush to clean it out you'll be amazed how much navel lint you recover
