PSA: Reminder to lube hood latches springs
Reminder to open your hood and lube it at least once a year. Went to close the hood, and noticed it wasn’t latching correctly. One of the hinges was rusted frozen Soaked it with Liquid Wrench and worked it free with a screwdriver. |

Great PSA. I too had to do this same Task a few months ago. I also sprayed as much penetrating spray oil into the black cable that runs from latch to latch as those are known to rust and snap or bind and snap. I was so surprised how frozen open (unlatched) my passenger side was.

My hood latches don't look like that. It's very hidden and requires lots of trim removal to get to

Mine are the small spring style as well, I assume you are talking about that style where the “pin” on the hood drops down into the “hole” on the core support. I usually just pack those in a good synthetic grease and make sure to keep them clean and free from debris Sent from my iPhone using Xoutpost.com |

My right side was not.latching closed. So I had to spray it and the spring down inside the "hole" to ensure movement/proper function, then I lubed the left too and then uses spray lube down the latch cable that goes between the two latches as that one is prone to failure. What are we supposed to be lubing these with? Sent from my iPhone using Xoutpost.com Last edited by ajacks8; 12-03-2020 at 06:02 PM. |

I use penetrating oil on the springs and cable and a bit of silicone grease on the pins themselves. Mine aren’t the “claw” style though, mine are the little “pin” through design.

I redid our latches and cables last year. Tension spring on the old latches still seemed fine
It's just the plastic guides that get fatigued, and the main cable closest to the DS latch was stretched |

I use CorrosionX first to loosen things up and also soak the cables. Then I use white lithium grease on the 'pins' like Purplefade mentioned and hinges. The white lithium grease clings better.

I used Tw25b on my pins and the connector areas on the cables.
Tw25b is what we run on the M240B, M249 and the M2 for lubrication. It works like white lithium but when it gets too full of dirt it dries and cracks off like candle wax and it penetrates metal, plus since it'll handle the heat of a crew served weapon going cyclic engine compartment temps (even here) haven't been a problem.
