This isn't good....

Since it is f'n freezing here, and many of us are stuck inside, I am posting this just to stimulate some conversation. Not trying to start a debate or argument. This is the beginning of latest project-https://xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-forums/x5-e53-forum/112683-fence-02-4-6-a.html
So, for 2 weeks I have been dabbling with fixes. I knew it did a slight rattle at start up, so expected guides at some point. With todays work-it will be sooner than later! There are some big chunks in here that concern me. And, is that little "U" shaped tube a piston squirter?
This motor is in worse shape than I thought. Kids, always drop that lower oil pan and you will get a quick idea of what your internals look like.....Here we go! $$$$$$$$ Gotta love these V8's

Whats the mileage? How does the engine run? I've seen some on x5s for whatever reason now drop the pan and clean it out during a guide job. Maybe its a good time to pop the valve covers off and check if the guides look newish or at the very least try getting a good look inside the oil cap...

Purple, it has 124K. Have tried looking thru the cap with a camera, can't get very far. it does have a rattle, so thinking these are the remains of what is in there. Will be tearing it down this week probably to put a plan together.

Yeah better get in there and check it out then and save that rare 4.6 engine...

I'd have to agree with your conclusion. My son and I have a 4.4 block apart right now rebuilding it for the same reason.

The euphoria of buying a rare X5 4.6 for a really cheap price is replaced with dysphoria once the true reason why the previous seller sold the X.

True dat

Very true Up-but I knew this was an issue up front, so calculated that into my offer. As usual, contrary to seller saying it was "well maintained", I knew better. So far I just did rear subframe bushings(COMPLETELY GONE), 2 rear suspension arms, the steering wheel adjustment doesn't work, new seat controller to fix that on it's way, radio/nave wasn't working. Stole parts out of my parts rig. No Aluminum skid plate on it at all, etc etc. This was planned as a project, so I am ok with it.

Had a similar problem with the sons 4.4 those alloy bits are like web pieces of the front timing cover. New chain and guides 4 years ago, still fine. The other bits need more investigation.

That's definitely oil spray nozzle. Wonder what knocked that off.

Any idea about that pin like part? Part of some needle roller bearing? Or is it just a chip looking much like pin?
