I'm not aware of a way to manually override the auto dim.
You can test your auto-dim of your center rear view mirror by driving out in a bright day and putting your hand in front of the optical sensor of the front of the mirror. This should be on the right, front, side of the mirror while sitting in the driver's seat, facing forward.

You can also check it in the night time to activate the dimming feature by shining a light at the mirror portion, or the back side of the mirror.

Do note, that window tint will have an effect on this feature.

The opposite. No need for twist on auto dimming model. Manual dim is controlled by twisting the nose.

Something I had to Google when I first got my X5 since no flip lever.

X5chemist is on a distinguished road
My X5 has auto dim. The red nose doesn't spin. After more troubleshooting, I'll know to get auto dim switches.
