Not really, the planetary gear in the TC needs the front driveshaft to be connected to the rear driveshaft in order for the transmission to lock both drive shaft in park.

My Jeep ran an NV transfer case and completely removing the front drive shaft it still locked up in park. I’d have to remember which NV it ran, I’m sure different version, but again, it was chain drive and still totally kept the jeep from rolling with the front shaft totally removed. At one point I was rebuilding the front carrier bearing assembly and had the entire front output out of it and it would still not roll.

Not arguing obviously, I just find it strange that if only the from splines stripped out that it would still roll.

Yes, I agree with UpAllNight. I did have an attempt at replacine the guibo flex disc last year but couldn't get the darn front drive shaft pushed back to pull the flex plate out so I gave up. I also threw my right shoulder from getting one of the bolts loose.

I watched the video in the link you provided from a few posts ago UpAllNight. I believe I watched that video several months ago as well. Still can't figure out how he was able to push the DS rearward successfully.

With the mechanical grinding sound when shifting into gear, I think the spline on the front DS has rounded and the transfer case just spinning around it like a blender.

Most often the issue is one of the front CV axle popping out of the differential. This comes up about ones a year on xoutpost.


When it's the drive shaft the symptoms are different; rather than grinding and no attempt to move the sound is more of a loud repetitive click and it usually starts to happen only in certain turns like hard left turn that flexes the TC and transmission enough.

If you lift the front off the ground and turn each front wheel you may be able to tell by the ease of which turns easier which is loose.

If I'm right it's very good news much easier fix than prop shaft.

Think of the TC like a differential. All three in/out are free to turn based on the others. So when the Transmission is locked in park, both the front and back wheels must be engaged to not roll. Any wheel or driveshaft loose and it can roll.

Makes sense and is totally logical, I agree.

Question though, the guys that pull the front drive shaft and go real wheel drive only, how does that work? (Assuming they leave the TC in place and just pull the front shaft. I know guys who have had grinding issues and pulled the front shaft to get home and I would (almost) swear their cars still sat still in park?)

Just buy a good used transfer case and the extended driveshaft from cobra transmission. I have replaced the front driveshaft with their extended version on 7 E53's as preventative maintenance along with using a good amount of anti seize.

at :51 second mark when he puts the gear in drive.
The drive shaft spline was rounded and the TC female spline just spins loosely around it.

He ended up replacing the TC and with a longer drive shaft.

I don't know if I want to mess with the TC. There is a 2-piece drive shaft kit that is available out there and it works well for dealing with this problem. It's 1" longer so will mate into the section further up into the TC spline.

I hope that's the case too, Andrew but in 2018, I replaced both drive axles (complete with CV joints, etc). Front end is just about all new minus the struts assembly on each wheel.

That actually makes it more likely. Almost always when the CV pulls out is because it was removed and replaced not all that long ago. Apparently the spring clip wasn't fully engaged or for some reason was able to pull loose.

With somebody's help it will take seconds to determine if it's the drive prop or forward.

If it's the TC spline issue, the drive prop won't move. I think you can get a peek of that somewhere without removing any underbelly, maybe through the left front wheel well at back of dif.

In the five or six different cases like this, when it's been the splines the car wouldn't roll, it was always the CV axle loose.

When TC splines the failure was slow over time : months. When it was the CV axle it was instant and sounds like grinding gears

The reason some people can get away with pulling front drive propeller and default to rwd use they have x-drive with a TC that disengages the front axle when the car isn't moving, and somehow figures out when no resistance on the front axle to not try to apply power forward. Pre x-drive the TC is open differential as are both differential so any wheel spin is fully regulated by the abs system.
