Dropped something into my engine
What should I do? Leave a 7"x5/16" fiberglass dowel in the bottom of my oil pan? Drop the pan to take it out? Invent some new words to describe my deep inner feelings about the situation? Anyone else drop something down there and decide to leave it?

Leave nothing in there!
I think you should channel your inner Rube Goldberg and if that doesn't work pull the pan. A little sweat now saves an assload of cash later.... Sent from my SM-A730F using Tapatalk

Too bad it's fiberglass and not steel. If it was steel you might get lucky with a magnet.

what do you mean " rear pin that came with your big-sert kit"? The steel alignment dowels in the block don't come with the Big-sert kit. they were in your block, and hopefully they will go back in the holes. Did you mean to say the Big-sert, after installation is sticking up and preventing the alignment dowels from seating?
I am guessing the fiberglass dowel dropped straight down the return hole and remains upright...Can you fish tape on a wire to try and pull it back up (don't leave the tape down there)? Would a long, skinny, expanding claw grabber tool get it? I do think you should try everything to get it. |

There were two alignment pins that came with the Bigserts. The OD of the holes you drill to install the Bigserts is just larger than the stock pins so it appears that you are supposed to use these. They have a shoulder that installs downward and the minor OD is upward. The directions are a bit brief on this issue.

Rube is my Hero tied with Harbor Freight and my hoarding of odd tools I’ve come across over the years. I got a bore scope at Harbor Freight and took a look down the oil passage. I could see the end of the dowel. I was just able to grab the dowel with the super long skinny needle nose after finding the proper angle of attack. I tried using a cheapie grabber tool modified to 3 jaws vs 4 but couldn’t get traction. I didn’t have to go to planF G or H that Rube would have been pleased with.
