I'll also say, I like buying good quality tools and have non-issue spending money. I get satisfaction from working on this car and it's been a valuable learning experience for me.
I think my point was sort of overlooked. Again all the parts I am replacing are basically done, at the end of their life and ready to go. MOST of these lean code errors on the X5 I have are due to several basic parts. That's what I was trying to assess. If I was missing any of the basics. I'll spray the MAF sensor, and I'll swap out the CCV and tubing, along with the intake gasket. My bet at this point is the CCV tubes. I did have a crack in the lower boot, that's fixed. Valve cover gasket was blown out, that's now fixed too. After that, I'll get the smoke machine if needed.

Thanks. I just looked at the different models on ebay. Agreed, the NT510 looks like the best design. Seems like it does a lot. I'm going to buy it.
I just ordered the PCV hoses and valve, a new manifold gasket and new oil fill cap. Total with shipping was $100 even. I need a few more bits, which I'll buy from pelican or other, then need to wait for a warm day to get down to business. Sadly, no heated empty garage bay to work in...

I use a rubber clove and hose clamp it to the intake where the filter box attaches. Cut off a finger tip on the glove and clamp the hose in the finger tip. Easy peazy. You'll know inside of two minutes where your vacuum leak is. |

That's what I do so I'm getting as much of the intake system as possible. Some will say you shouldn't do it before the MAF because it puts oil on it, but a spray of MAF cleaner takes care of that.

Can someone recommend me a specific smoke machine? Seems like a lot of chinese junk and homemade. Like the guy using a cigar. Lol. I get it, but yeah, that's not for me.
