As many of you already know one of the simplest and easiest ways to check for a potential CCV issue on these M54 is by removing the oil fill cap while engine is running and since it's free and takes seconds I decided to start there.

Sure as shit I could barely pull the cap off. I'm talking the kind of suction that goes hand in hand with the "What happens in Vegas STAYS in Vegas" motto.

By the looks of the crunchy foam insulation from the CCV system hose it was probably original and could use a replacement so I ordered up a cheap kit off Amazon for $52.99 That includes all the necessary hoses.

I've used these kits a couple times before and have been happy with the price point vs quality. I mean there's only so many ways to make a plastic pipe no? The fitment is a little tight but the silicone spray makes life much easier.

Only difference between this Amazon kit and the one coming out was the "winter" version of this hose as I'll be reusing the winter jacket for the turbine.

Once I got the old CCV out I looked it over and didn't noticed anything blocked or even an excessive build up of "mayo". To be honest I was a little disappointed. I would have preferred one of those "There's your problem right there" moments but from my understanding even though I was able to blow air through the turbine just fine it could still not be functioning properly under vacuum. Here's hoping...I guess??

While I was putting in the new kit I noticed that the return hose to the dipstick tube looked a little short. Sure enough comparing to the old one it was several inches shorter. Turns out the CCV kit I bought was for an e46/e39/e83 and of course the e53 is a larger beast so that's my own fault for not paying attention. The original hose was in good shape but naturally one of the tabs broke while I was removing it so I wasn't able to reuse it.

So back to Amazon and I went with a Dorman 46105 PCV Valve Hose because it was available Prime next day shipping. Price of the new hose was $45

Unfortunately I don't have any pictures of this hose...but it's a hose and it's slightly longer

I buttoned everything back up, cleared the codes and fired up the engine.

No more vacuum on the oil cap and I didn't notice any smoke.

Test drive time!

Mine is probably due again for a CCV replacement. It was done 5 years ago but the X drives my wife to work and back a total of 2 miles each way. So hard on the system in sub freezing temperatures when the engine never gets warmed up. I noticed some mayo on the cap when I did my last oil service a few weeks ago.

I replaced this same setup when I worked on my daughter's 3.0 e53 but I don't recall whether or not the returning oil on these drain the same way the e46 do. On my other kids e46es i cut the lower, outer portion of the oil dipstick tube off to allow the oil to drain into the oil pan and not get clogged. It was do that or buy the 'updated-northern climate' version for $85 IIRC.
Anyone recall if that is an issue on the 3.0 in northern climates?
I was looking for documentation but it is escaping me right now.

Those short drives are a killer. The Mrs. works about a mile from the house and usually walks or rides her bike but the last few weeks of winter were a little rough and she drove quite a bit. The mayo build up was instant

I'm pretty sure the CCV design of the e53 3.0 is the same as my e46 the way it drains. I don't know if any of my vehicles have a "northern version" tube but honestly I doubt it would make a significant difference if you're driving short distances in the cold. It's not a great design and they just threw a bandaid on it.

Either way the mayo builds up quick on any of my M54s if I don't drive them for at least an hour at a time.

Here is the oil dipstick mod I was looking for on the e46. Like I said, I just can't remember what exactly I did to the 3.0 e53.
I agree that short distances don't allow it to get up to operating temp but this very thin area can clog and prevent the oil from draining back to the pan. Then the oil just backs up and leaks out the top of the lowest fitted hose on the CCV.

Interesting. I think I might give that a try with a junkyard pull

My personal experience has been with the majority of the mayo build up being in the tube from the valve cover to the turbine

you should throw a container of Seafoam motor treatment into the crank case and run it for 50 kms then drain. Will help clean every part the oil/mayo touches.

I was a big fan of Seafoam years back and then I hung out on the internet too much. Now I don't know what to think anymore of the stuff

"It's just lighter fluid"

"It will ruin your engine"

"fixed my issues and now I get 700mpg!"

"It's only for small engines"

I use it in every neglected bmw I buy. Half can in oil, half in gas tank.

No negative results yet. But ymmv of course.
