But if it makes unnecessary swipes it's either not initialized (adjusted to windscreen properties) or the sensor is not working perfectly correctly.

It def need to be calibrated. I had my windshield replaced and sensing mode ran randomly until I calibrated. I used my scanner but it just told me how it's prob in the manual.

I did initialize through INPA. Is calibrating something different?
I'm gonna turn the key to ON and spray the sensor once and then leave it alone to see if it keeps swiping. |

Wow you're some kind of a rain sensor expert!
With the wiper switch on 1st position (automatic wipers), I initialized the sensor in INPA, then turned off the wiper arm and ignition. Then turned it on to run position and put the wiper switch to automatic. It did one swipe. I sprayed the windshield and the wipers swiped twice and that's it. I waited 5 minutes and no extra swipes. Then sprayed again, it did 2 swipes with interval of about 5 seconds and no more swipes. This is now working perfectly. Your help is much appreciated! Not that useful of a feature but lots if satisfaction to have gotten it to work |

For somebody with misophonia, it's a life safer. I can't tolerate wipers running: it's like fingernails on a chalkboard. If I'm in a car without rain sensing, I have to manually wipe with the hit it once button add needed.

G'Day from Australia!!
I read this old post and like to ask something. I have the 2001 (april 2001) E53 4.4i and like to retrofit the rain/light sensor. What I have read so far is that I need the following hardware 1. The RLS with the prisma (apparently that is one single part) 2. The GM3 module (behind the glove box) 3. The connector plus the wire (any idea if that is already pre-fitted with my earlier version E53 from april 2001?? 4. I have the original BMW E53 windscreen but no cut-out section in it 5. Do I need another light switch?? or would it work with mine?? And in the end if everything is wired in I have to code it and initialise it. Is that correct so far?? Cheers |

Your vehicle is not pre-wired.
I was lucky, my 2002 was. I did get the new windshield that had the rain sensor prisma pre installed. Then I just clipped the rain sensor to it. Your can check with nsc expert if you have the rain sensor option in your GM module, you might not have to change it. Do you have access to a scrap yard? Almost all X5s have the rain sensor feature, so you can take it apart and take everything you need out, especially the wiring. Here's what the diagram looks like |
