I would - there's a filter/screen at the bottom of the reservoir that's hard to clean. The new reservoir is cheap...

FYI,
My 1998 528i PS Reservoir is still stock at 23y/190K miles. I'd replace the X5 PS reservoir if you have > 200K. The hoses: BMW, Cohline or Rein are good. I wrote the trick to disconnect the hose (at radiator side). There is a trick, if you do it correctly, then it is easy, otherwise, it could be a nightmare with the quick-disconnect thingy...

Clavuron,
You have a diesel engine. I have gasoline engine. The diesel engine may or may not have the same PS hose design. The trick was written here... DIY: BMW M54 PS Hose Tool Trick (18-mm and 21-mm wrenches!) https://xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-forums/...-wrenches.html

That's a neat trick if the hose is stuck and you don't have the special pliers made for the job. On my previous picture the plastic ring is removed to show better those internal locking parts.

$13 at FCP. Never let me down on both my BMWs power steering hose replacement jobs.

Looks a lot like this tool. Which side of the red block is used, and what is the size of that opening. I have this tool for removing shark bite fittings looks like it might fit. Before I bought the tool I would use a crescent wrench to push on the Chinese finger cuff Release collar.

The 18-mm and 21-mm wrenches trick worked for me...

Thanks very much to all for the input. I'm leaning with just going ahead and replacing the reservoir because it's old, it's plastic, it's not very expensive, and I'm in there anyway.
The tips for dealing with the return hose will no doubt come in handy down the road somewhere (and that FPC tool looks like an incredibly simple solution), but the leak I have is from the feed hose (the hose that runs between the reservoir and the pump.) It does have funky clamps, too. Are those just regular Oetiker clamps or something BMW specific? Thanks and regards, Chris |
