Just skimming through the thread, sounds like a lot has been looked at and done.

A few years back, my wife's X5 all of a sudden ran rough, wouldn't accelerate properly, hesitate on acceleration, often times start up and dies and when I can get it to stay running, black smoke and pop-pop on exhaust.

After a lot of parts replacement and codes pulled, it turned out that the motor was starved of fuel due to BAD/OLD fuel filter.

The fuel pump was also replaced for extra measure and peace of mind.

Crappy compression test results

Pretty sad for Ol Betsy's cylinders:

1. 47
2 105
3. 105
4. 110
5. 110
6. 80

I put some oil in 1 and checked again came out 80
Same cylinder gained 10 after seafoam but no factor.

I think it's done 4.

Thanks everyone for great advice and help. I learned a lot. Of all the things I've done on the car that damn gas filter was the hardest. Also I learned that it would be better to delve into diagnosing hard core before replacing parts. Not sure what to do now. Anyway I might start a new thread about used engine or scrapping it out. Thanks again. This is great forum.

Clear the codes and adaptations and drive it as hard as you can, there is a chance you might free up the rings.

Anyone going down this path might also want to get a vacuum gauge at the same time as the compression tester.

Something unbelievably stupid

So when I got the compression tester I only hand tightened the spark plug hole fitting onto tester hose. Naturally it stayed in #2 and the hose part unscrewed instead leaving it there. I didn't realize it and ran the spark plug in and tightened it. It felt kind of odd but I was under pressure to get to work so was out of patience. Installed coil and noticed it was like an inch high. Removed plug and realized what happened. So now that fitting is stuck and tightened down in the hole. What a can of worms. Any thoughts? I was thinking of putting plug back in with lock tite or something letting it harden then try to back them both out. It has no bolt style shoulders. Its basically smooth. Hoas same female thread a spark plug.

Yikes! That's going to tough if you tightened it in! Maybe an easy out or internal pipe wrench?

If there was any doubt before....You should NOT attempt to do a head gasket yourself...

I would love to see a picture but there should be a way to get a socket on the fitting for the compression tester - otherwise how would you ever tighten it to the hose in the first place?

put some red loctite on a spark plug. Screw it in and let it sit until it cures to max strength (24 hours?) and then remove both it and the fitting.
