2006 X5 3.0i MT "Stop Buffer" PN 22-31-1-096-727

Hi,

This part "Stop Buffer" PN 22-31-1-096-727 fell off my car and landed on the driveway.

Car still runs fine and I plan to replace it ($26) anyway...

Does anyone know exactly what its function is?

Thanks!

It looks to be what the rear transmission mount actually sits on. I can't see how it could fall off since it seems to support the transmission mount and should be under load.

You can see the stop buffer in place in the support frame here...

Perhaps it is only under load in certain conditions, i.e. when in reverse.

*edit* Thought about this some more and I reckon it is only under load when removing or installing the main mount bolt, #4 - it likely supports the end of the mount and stops it from sitting too low, making inserting/removing the bolt difficult.

The last few weeks, I have been driving w/o this rubber piece. Zero issues.
I bet you that quite a few of you guys are driving w/o this rubber piece, w/o knowing it.
This piece basically acts like a cushion for fore and aft movement of the trans.
Over-engineered part in my opinion.

- Cannot justify spending $25 for this rubber thing, although I can afford it.

- Had some time today, so I installed it back with zip ties, looks fine.

I'll check mine next time I'm under there - although the diesel has a large plastic splash guard over the transmission and transfer case, which would likely catch anything that fell off.

Audi has something similar on their transmission mounts. Basically a space filler and buffer. I will check mine next time it's on ramps.

The purpose must be to buffer longitudinal force on the bushing on harder deceleration.
