Wow! In older vehicles, those are fusible links. One thing I do is buy different sizes of wire loom. I go around looking for wiring that may rub against something to cause a short. Wrap any loose wiring in wire loom. You can buy different colors to designate power, ground, or groups of wire.

Glad you got it fixed.

You know, seeing what happened to you, and knowing what's back there, I'm surprised it is not more of a problem with the spare tire carrier back there that gets screwed in above the battery cables. Seems like it would be an easy mistake to do some real unintentional welding damage on an unfused 2 gauge wire.
