Engine is mounted in the chassis.

Ordered a replacement ECU as it seems the one I got is toast.

-ECU Relay receives 12v
-ECU Relay outputs 12v when ignition is on
-Pin 7 wake-up wire at the 58-pin body to ECU connector receives 12v to wake up the ECU
-The 3 switched power wires at the 58-pin body to ECU connector (pins 1,3 and 5) are receiving the switched 12v power from the relay
-ECU ground wires (pins 2,4, and 6) on body to ECU connector are grounded properly at the ground point on the firewall
-Double checked the X2412 58-pin body to ECU connector housing, wiring, etc. (had to pin it myself)
-No burned fuses, and the engine management fuses in the fuse cassette on the engine harness are all good and all receive power when the ignition is on
-I get power to the injectors, MAF, etc. on the engine wiring harness when ignition is on

Despite all this, the ECU will not communicate with any other electronics in the car and will not communicate through the OBD2 port. So the next step for me is to replace the engine control module.

Have you measured the diagnostic line between OBD2 pin 7 and DDE X2412 pin 8 (white/violet).

I imagine you have tried, but thought I'd put it out there. Could there be some kind of identification issue between the cluster and DDE which won't allow communication via ISTA? What about using INPA and going straight to the DDE?

Actually the vehicle configuration (at least with DIS) is read from EWS module. The actual diagnostic line from OBD pin 7 goes straight to powertrain modules. Other modules use pin 8 to instrument cluster working as a gateway to K-/I-bus modules.

DDE communication with other modules goes via CAN-bus, but it has nothing to do with diagnostics.

Fair enough, I know in the past I have seen cluster issues cause communication issues with various modules using ISTA (it's been a looooong time since I have used DIS so can't comment there).

What I did find was that the CAN high and CAN low pins on the DDE unit had 1/10 the normal resistance between each other.

That is otherwise known as a short. Short doesn't have to be direct short.

It's probably a faulty CAN transceiver IC on the PCB of the DDE unit.

E53 M54 to M57 diesel engine swap (with 6-speed manual transmission) *pic heavy*

Put on YouTube and a link usually auto creates with preview.

It makes me very happy to see those videos.
