Wobbly folding mirrors - what do you do?
You know when you get in the car and someone has walked last and pushed the passenger mirror, so it's out of alignment? And you have to reach over from the drivers' seat to get it right? Or when the car pulls some Gs and the mirror/s slop back or forwards and you have to tweak it again?? It's kinda doing my head in... whenever I find used, they are always loose too. Is there a DIY fix for these nasty pins, or have you gone for fixed alignment mirrors?

If you can't reset the position with the auto fold/extend button then the gear is roached. While looking for the parts at a yard, you can put s screw in the bottom of the gap and lock it in place and still keep it foldable manually as the screw will roll around the radius.

Rats.. I wish I had the diagram, I will look and if I find it I will post it... anywho, here;s what I did.
I popped the back, colored piece of the mirror off and right towards the mount, you can almost tell where the little "detint" pin is, you can drill a hole in the mirror body and spray it full of penetrating oil. Let it sit for a bit and then cycle the mirror a few times to work it in, I felt the pins seat into mine almost right away. If they don't feel better after opening and closing them a few times you can slide an allen wrench, small phillip screw driver, or "other" down into the hole and work the detent pin up and down a few times. Once you have it staying in place, just pop the back of the mirror back on. If that made any sense at all... good luck! If that doesn't work, then EOD may be right, your gear is already toast, but if it's just "loose" or "rattling" or not wanting to stay in place, this fixed mine. |

the mirrors use a stack of plastic clutch gears with spring application, along with another set of brittle plastic gearing for the power folding system. i find once they're gone, there is nothing that can be done. i have tried a full disassembly and repair gears kit which ended up by becoming a complicated time consuming endeavor which required to buy a bunch of special gear pullers and installers and still I would encounter springs flying across the shop getting lost. i found a good aftermarket set and paid for new replacements that were designed differently internally with a better more robust design.

aureliusmax,
Are your replacements folding too? Mine has folding mirrors. However, when I hit the button, they fold and extend back out. I was thinking of replacing them.

Open up both mirrors (remove painted cover) and check both micro-switches. Check this thread for pictures... https://xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-forums/...t-folding.html

Last time i was at my paintless dent removal spot, the guy pushed the mirror in by hand, and since then i have a click everytime it opens and closes. Everything is fully functioning otherwise. Any experts on the topic that know what it could be? Clicks hard, like its skipping a gear but functionality is normal? Thanks guys.

It's true. This system is quite Comex with lots and lots of gears.
It can be MANY problems now. One that is OFTEN overlooked, because it is a PITA to access, is the motor housing cover has broken open and a gear is actually moving about by mistake and therefore not actually doing what it was supposed to do. It's hard to describe without pics, which I did do a write up of, elsewhere on xoutpost... Typical culprits are missing metal tang on the limit switch, or bad motor gears OR bad motor housing. Sorry to say but it will probably take hours to distinguish the issue BUT once you do,it's so satisfying. Sent from my Pixel 3 using Tapatalk
